Boeing Executes First Contract With SPACEHAB Under Existing MOU.WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 12, 1999--The Boeing Co. has signed a new contract with SPACEHAB Inc., expected to total $5 million, for the use of SPACEHAB's Integrated Cargo Carrier (ICC ICC See: International Chamber of Commerce ) to support Boeing's role of assembling the International Space Station (ISS ISS See Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS). ). Boeing will use the ICC on Shuttle flight STS-102, planned for launch in March 2000, to carry critical assembly items, as well as maintenance hardware that will be stored on orbit for future use. This mission will follow NASA's use of the ICC, together with a SPACEHAB Logistics Double Module, on the first two ISS re-supply missions, currently scheduled for May and October 1999. The new contract is the first signed under the December 1998 Memorandum of Understanding A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is a legal document describing a bilateral or multilateral agreement between parties. It expresses a convergence of will between the parties, indicating an intended common line of action and may not imply a legal commitment. Shelley A. Harrison characterized Boeing's selection of the ICC for STS-102 as a logical extension of SPACEHAB's commercial re-supply services first to Mir and now to the ISS. "This contract, and the larger MOU with Boeing from which it stems, reflects confidence in SPACEHAB's ability to meet customer's ISS cargo delivery needs for pressurized pres·sur·ize tr.v. pres·sur·ized, pres·sur·iz·ing, pres·sur·iz·es 1. STS-102 will represent the third use of SPACEHAB's ICC, an externally mounted pallet and associated flight support equipment that maximizes use of available space in the Shuttle cargo bay. SPACEHAB's ICC enables a Shuttle to transport up to 6,000 pounds of unpressurized cargo, including spacewalk Verb 1. spacewalk - move in space outside a space craft walk - use one's feet to advance; advance by steps; "Walk, don't run!"; "We walked instead of driving"; "She walks with a slight limp"; "The patient cannot walk yet"; "Walk over to the cabinet" tools and other hardware slated for use outside the ISS. SPACEHAB, with its Johnson Engineering and Astrotech subsidiaries, is the world's leading provider of commercial payload processing services for manned and unmanned payloads. SPACEHAB is the first company to commercially develop, own and operate habitable modules that provide laboratory facilities and logistics re-supply aboard NASA's Space Shuttles. The Company also supports NASA astronaut training at Johnson Space Center, Houston. |
