Boeing Awards Harris $3.9 Million Follow-on Contract For U.S. Navy Missile Data Link Production.

Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), a leading supplier of digital data links for military aircraft-launched missiles, announced today that it has been awarded a $3.9 million contract by The Boeing Company, St. Louis, Missouri, to retrofit 120 U.S. Navy Standoff Land Attack Missile (SLAM) Weapon Data Links (WDL). Harris will retrofit the missiles with the Advanced Weapon Data Link (AWDL) configuration for the SLAM Expanded Response (SLAM ER). The SLAM ER provides the U.S. Navy with surgical strike capability against high-value, fixed land targets, ships in port, or ships at sea. Contract awards to date for Harris on the SLAM ER AWDL program total nearly $29 million. Further production and retrofit awards could increase the overall contract value for the program to nearly $33 million by 2005.

The Harris-built AWDL is instrumental in providing a man-in-the-loop visual link between the control aircraft and the launched missile. The AWDL transmits a continuous, real-time image of the target taken from a camera positioned in the nose of the missile to the controlling aircraft or shipboard terminal. This allows the pilot to update the point of impact during the missile's final moments of flight. Designed for deployment from aircraft-carrier-based and land-based aircraft, SLAM ER can be easily adapted for ship launch. SLAM ER can be launched from safe standoff ranges of more than 150 nautical miles.

SLAM ER incorporates a number of improvements to the baseline SLAM, a derivative of the Harpoon anti-ship missile. Under a previous contract, Harris received over $58 million to produce the WDL for the SLAM, and has been working in close partnership with Boeing on SLAM-related programs since 1992. As a direct result of exemplary program performance, Boeing awarded Harris its Gold Level Preferred Supplier Certification (PSC) in October of 1998, for maintaining a stringent set of quality and delivery standards in executing the SLAM WDL contract. Harris GCSD is one of only a dozen of Boeing's estimated 30,000 suppliers to obtain Gold Level PSC status.

In addition, Harris was recently recognized for the successful implementation of Boeing's Lean Pathways initiative on the (SLAM ER) program.
