Business Editors & Aerospace Writers

SPRINGFIELD, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 6, 2002

Imagery generated by DigitalGlobe's QuickBird satellite will be transformed by Boeing Autometric's high-end photogrammetric software toolkit, Softplotter(R), in order to support mapping and intelligence missions performed for the Department of Defense, it was announced recently.

Boeing Autometric, a global leader in geospatial information and technology solutions, is a unit of Boeing Integrated Defense Systems Boeing Integrated Defense Systems (Boeing IDS), based in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, is a unit of The Boeing Company responsible for defense and aerospace products and services. , a part of The Boeing Co.  7320-10 rocket. As the world's highest-resolution commercial imaging satellite, QuickBird is currently supporting the Department of Defense by collecting imagery with resolutions of up to 60 centimeters, reducing the DoD's dependence on classified intelligence systems.

By using commercial imaging systems, the costs associated with security, communications, and distribution of information from existing intelligence sources are greatly reduced. With the use of Boeing Autometric's Softplotter(R), customers will create imagery and vector maps Vector Map (VMAP), AKA Vector Smart Map, is a vector-based collection of GIS data covering the earth at various detail levels.  using terrain datasets obtained by QuickBird.

"The value of any imagery lies in the ability to interpret what you see," said Tony Moraco, deputy general manager of Boeing Autometric. "With the recent upgrades we have incorporated into Softplotter, coupled with the imagery obtained by QuickBird, the Department of Defense will be using the highest-quality maps available."
