The upgrade has included, among other things, converting 16 beds so they can be used by late-stage Alzheimer's patients, said executive director Marilyn Goodsell. The complex is one of 240 in 25 states operated by the Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society.

The Eugene facility totals 151 skilled-nursing beds. Aside from upgrading 16 of those beds to Alzheimer's status, the renovation also refurbished 37 beds that are used for sub-acute care, Goodsell said.

Plus the center refurbished corridors and other common areas to create more "cozy See COSE.  spaces" and nooks for patients and their families to meet, she said.

In addition, the center renovated its main dining room, which accommodates 20 to 25 people, she said.

Demand has been strong for beds that cater to patients who need high levels of care, Goodsell said. There's been less demand for beds that cater to patients who need only intermediate levels of care, because in recent years many developers in the Eugene-Springfield area have built assisted living as·sist·ed living

The center was due for an upgrade, and the society's big decision was whether to build a new facility or renovate the existing one, Goodsell said.

"We thought this building has a lot of wonderful, unusually good space," she said.

The center has about 160 employees.
