Bocelli audience hits heights.

Three thousand Labour Party delegates took over our newest concert venue but in the end it didn't matter. The music ( to borrow The Sage Gateshead's slogan ( had moved and 9,500 fans had followed it.

This enormous audience at the Metro Radio Metro Radio is an Independent Local Radio station broadcasting to North East England. Its output is principally contemporary pop and dance music. It is owned by EMAP and is part of their Big City Network of stations.  Arena was the biggest for classical music in the North-East since Luciano Pavarotti Noun 1. Luciano Pavarotti - Italian tenor (born in 1935)
Pavarotti
performed his sole UK concert at the venue in 2000.

Pavarotti was then in the twilight of his career. Andrea Bocelli, the blind Italian superstar, is at the peak of his, as was patently obvious on Saturday night.

His voice slips effortlessly from sweet and soft to blistering power, all in a phrase.

He didn't so much hit as glide up to the high notes and occasionally drew gasps from his audience for the sheer duration of some of the tricky ones lower down.

The concert started with a brisk blast of the overture from Carmen Carmen

by the accompanying Czech National Symphony Orchestra. Conductor Marcello Rota then went off-stage to collect the star of the show.

Centre stage, hands hanging loosely by his side and eyes shut, the tenor launched into Leoncavallo's Mattinata. Big screens made clear even to those at the back that Bocelli scales the heights without even breaking into a sweat.

No less brilliant was his glamorous co-star, soprano and fellow Italian Paola Sanguinetti. They have sung together many times and their duets ( climaxing in the old favourite O Sole Mio ( nearly lifted the roof.

Bocelli has amassed an enormous following, partly through prodigious recording and also for his readiness to embrace the non-classical world.

Purists might have wished for an unamplified performance but this was right for this venue.

With the talent, Bocelli also clearly has the charm. Clapped back for a third encore, he said falteringly: "I speak horrible English ( not enough to tell you many things I'd like to tell you."

He went on to thank his orchestra and his co-star while.

From the women in the audience, there were audible "Ahh"s.
