The V.34 Boca Office Communicator provides a 14,400bps fax and 28,800bps data modem, a voicemail system, full duplex speakerphone with echo cancellation, and caller ID support. Both products feature easy Plug and Play installation and Windows 95 compatibility.

Calls can be initiated as data or voice and then switched to DSVD mode. Once a call is initiated, switching between modes can be done as often as necessary. One user can call another using a normal telephone; when they decide to go to DSVD mode, they simply launch a data communications software application. In switching to DSVD mode from data mode, one user picks up the phone and calls a remote user; once the remote user picks up the phone, DSVD mode is entered. From DSVD mode, if the voice users hang up, the modems go back to data only mode. Alternatively, if the communications program is exited, the call goes back to voice only mode.

"Boca Research continues its industry leadership by adding the DSVD technology to its product platforms and making it available to the marketplace at an affordable price," said Larry Steffann, Boca's vice president of operations. "PC users have the ability to do collaborative computing over a single telephone line, simultaneously using desktop conferencing applications, performing data file transfers, and interactive gaming," he added.

These new DSVD products come with software that provides everything the user needs to communicate whether it's optimizing data transfers, document conferencing, or surfing the Internet. It includes Midisoft's MediaWorks, collaborative whiteboard software products, Radish Communications' VoiceView TalkShop, VocalTec's Internet Phone, Netcom's Netcruiser, Multimedia Labs' Internet Passport, America Online, CompuServe, and GEnie. Suggested retail pricing is $449 for the SoundExpression 28.8SVD and $369 for the V.34 Boca Office Communicator. Shipments are anticipated to begin in early October.
