Boca Research Shipping New Pro16 Corporate Modem Family Products.

BOCA RATON, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 16, 1996--Boca Research Inc. (NASDAQ:BOCI), a leader in the data communications industry, announced Tuesday it began shipping its new Boca Pro16 Corporate Modem and Pro16 Rack System the end of June.

This new family of modems is designed specifically for large corporate environments needing optimum business and network-managed communication features, and offers flexibility for meeting growing configuration requirements.

Boca Pro16 High-Performance Features

Ideal for demanding business applications, the Boca Pro16 family includes the Corporate Modem, an external desktop model, and the Rack System. Both models are 28.8 Kbps data/14.4 Kbps modems that feature a 16-bit processor for high-performance transmissions, are standard dial-up- and leased-line-capable, support synchronous and asynchronous communications, are flash ROM upgradable, as well as provide remote access. The Boca Pro16 family comes with complete security features including the ability to download and upload the security database between the Pro16 Corporate Modem and the Pro16 Rack System, set password expiration, outdial disable, dial stored phone numbers as well as provide DES (Data Encryption Standard) encryption with SuperSecure, a feature that allows random rotation of DES keys. In addition, the Pro16 modems can support up to 600 password-protected user accounts per modem. The Boca Pro16 Corporate Modem has a suggested retail price of $549. In addition, the Boca Pro16 family of modems is upgradable via the flash ROM feature when the ITU 33.6 Kbps standard is approved.

The Boca Pro16 Rack System has the same features as the Corporate Modem, but also includes network management capability for large organizations requiring centralized communications. Its SNMP-manageable controller card has a standard serial interface over which it runs SLIP (Serial Line Interface Protocol) allowing network management tools to query other Boca Pro16 Rack Modems. One controller card can manage up to eight racks or a total of 128 modems. The rack chassis supports up to 17 V.34 modem cards, or 16 modems with a controller card and two power supplies. The redundancy feature ensures minimal down time; should a power failure occur with one of the power supplies, the other one automatically takes over. To offer complete flexibility to the customer, the Boca Pro16 Rack System products can be purchased as a bundle with either eight or 16 modems, or purchased as individual components. The Pro16 Rack System fully loaded with 16 modems and one power supply has a suggested retail price of $8,949; the Pro16 Rack with eight modems and a power supply has a suggested retail price of $4,449.

Individual Boca Pro16 modems, an optional controller card and an additional power supply for redundancy are also available. In addition, Boca Research is offering an SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) software bundle featuring SNMPc, a Windows-based network management platform, and RackView, an easy-to-use graphical user interface for Windows which provides access to all modem functions as well as a quick visual reference on modem status. The Boca SNMP software bundle has a suggested retail price of $979.
