Rev Wilkes, who took up his position in March 2006, said he was sad to leave but added that his departure would provide the opportunity to use his experience in cross-cultural missions.

He said: "It became clear in prayer, during a silent retreat, that it would help the cathedral to have the right gifts in the right roles to meet its financial and organisational challenges if I offered to move.

In his role as Dean, Rev Wilkes, aged 60, has worked closely with Bishop David, leading services, organising events, keeping in touch with his congregation and dealing with vicars in the diocese.

Bishop David said: "Bob Wilkes and I, together with my senior colleagues, are exploring his future involvement in parish-based ministry, with wider local and national responsibilities, amongst those of Christian and other faiths in cross-cultural mission.
