), the leader in proven, comprehensive technologies for preK-12 education, today announced that its president, Bob Roliardi, has been named to the board of directors of the Professor Garfield Foundation, a non-profit organization A non-profit organization (abbreviated "NPO", also "non-profit" or "not-for-profit") is a legally constituted organization whose primary objective is to support or to actively engage in activities of public or private interest without any commercial or monetary profit purposes.  created to provide children, parents, and teachers an opportunity to enhance and support classroom learning in new and innovative ways.

Established in 2004 by Paws Inc., the creative, licensing, marketing, and brand management business for "Garfield the Cat," the Professor Garfield Foundation helps children to safely explore new ways of learning and creatively express themselves through a free interactive learning portal (www.professorgarfield.org) that contains educationally sound games and activities, including a selection of standards-based lessons and material from PDL's KnowledgeBox[R] digital learning system.

The educational content Co which ranges from traditional subjects such as reading, writing and math, to career goal exploration, to activities for children with learning disabilities Co is presented by Professor Garfield, based on Garfield the Cat and other popular characters created by cartoonist Jim Davis. The educational content is reviewed by educational experts, upgraded continuously, and tested in classroom settings. The Professor Garfield portal receives an average of 4,000 visitors per day.

"I have been extremely fortunate to have my career parallel such a dramatic period in the development of technology and its application for helping to change how students learn," said Roliardi. "Leading Pearson Digital Learning, the largest instructional school software business in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. , has given me unique insights and expertise that, I hope, will be of benefit to the board in pursuing their mission. The opportunities to affect learning through technology are great and, at PDL, we are always focused on helping with that effort."

Roliardi spent the early years of his career in K-12 classroom and counseling positions. For the past 30 years he has worked in the school publishing business. It was a position in the education technology business during its pioneering days of the late 1970s that greatly shaped his personal feelings about how students learn. Roliardi has headed up Pearson's digital curriculum division since 1999, starting with Electronic Education, developer of the KnowledgeBox system and distributor of the Waterford early learning products.
