Boats held up by the weather.

BOAT fishing has been badly hampered by strong onshore winds.

When boats have been able to go out, sport has been reasonable with a few cod to 8lb from the inshore in·shore

 marks and, when possible to fish the wrecks, there have been cod, a few ling into double figures and the odd decent pollack.

Mackerel mackerel, common name for members of the family Scombridae, 60 species of open-sea fishes, including the albacore, bonito, and tuna. They are characterized by deeply forked tails that narrow greatly where they join the body; small finlets behind both the dorsal and  are still only being taken in odd numbers, both from boat and shore.

What are needed are a few calm sunny days, then this species will move in in force.

In midweek, the Sarah JFK out of the Tyne managed to go out and had a decent catch of cod and ling into double figures - plus a good number of mackerel.

Shore angling has seen a slight improvement in codling catches due to the sea conditions we have experienced.

Warkworth has produced cod to 4lb and there have been a few cod of 2lb to 2'lb from the cliffs at Sandy Bay, with crab and rag taking fish.

Blyth pier has produced the odd mackerel and coalfish, with plaice plaice: see flatfish.

Commercially valuable European flatfish (Pleuronectes platessa). At most 36 in. (90 cm) long, the plaice normally has both eyes on the right side of the head and four to seven bony bumps near its eyes.
 to 1lb, and South Shields pier has given the odd cod, the best 5lb on crab, with sdecent plaice averaging 1'lb. The best was 2'lb on ragworm.

Roker Pier has been closed most of the week due to the sea conditions.

English angling writer Jim O'Donnell spends a lot of the year in Florida chartering his own boat on the Florida Keys.

Some of the species taken include Tarpon tarpon (tär`pŏn), common name for members of the family Elopidae, large herringlike game fish of the warm seas of the Western Hemisphere, ranging occasionally from Long Island to Brazil and to the west coast of Africa and entering freshwater , Bonefish bonefish, common name for a fish belonging to either of two species of the family Albulidae. Albula vulpes is widespread in warm, shallow marine waters, and Dixonina nemoptera is found only in the West Indies. , Permit, Lemon Shark and Bull Shark.

THE Whitley Bay AS start their Summer League on Sunday. This is a series of seven shore competitions which are open to all anglers.

The entry fee is a oneoff payment of pounds 10 for all seven matches. There is also an optional sweep of pounds 5 at each competition.

Fishing this Sunday is from noon to 4pm. Meet at Patterson's Garage, Beadnell.

The overall winner of the seven matches will win pounds 200 and the heaviest single fish taken over the seven competitions will win pounds 100.

Five of the matches will be fished on a Sunday and carry Penn Points.
