that left two people dead and will present its findings to the Lane County prosecutor's office, a process that should take about a week.

Twenty-five to 30 police officers, firefighters and others from Springfield, Eugene and Lane County responded to the 35th Street duplex (communications) duplex - Used to describe a communications channel that can carry signals in both directions, in contrast to a simplex channel which only ever carries a signal in one direction.  where Tomas Ortega-Benitez shot and killed his ex-wife, Paula Benitez, held police at bay for seven hours and then turned the gun on himself.

"Anytime there's an officer-involved shooting we do an internal investigation," Sgt. Dick Jones said Wednesday. A board of Springfield police and law enforcement officials from other agencies will conduct the investigation, Jones said.

The board's report will include information such as how much tear gas tear gas, gas that causes temporary blindness through the excessive flow of tears resulting from irritation of the eyes. The gas is used in chemical warfare and as a means for dispersing mobs.  police used, how many shots police fired and whether officers at the scene followed agency policies.

The report will go to the Lane County district attorney's office for review to make sure that any use of force was appropriate, Jones said.

Two officers shot back when Ortega-Benitez opened fire on them as they approached the duplex.

Those officers - and another officer who was struck but uninjured when a bullet hit the pepper spray canister on his belt - were placed on administrative leave for two days, a standard practice whenever police fire their weapons or are shot, Jones said.

The leave gives officers time to see how they feel and request counseling if they need it, he said. "The purpose is to make sure their heads are on straight," Jones said.
