Board eyes kids with jailed parents.

Byline: SUSAN PALMER The Register-Guard

It's not a question that comes up in class very often: How many students have a parent or guardian in prison?

But Bethel School The Bethel School is a historic school in Monticello, Florida. It is located on County Road 149. On October 12, 2001, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.  Board member Andrea Ortiz raised the question recently, and Assistant Superintendent Assistant Superintendent, or Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), was a rank used by police forces in the British Empire. It was usually the lowest rank that could be held by a European officer, most of whom joined the police at this rank.  Tim Keeley had some answers at the board's meeting Monday night.

Of the 5,500 students in Bethel area schools, at least 26 are known to have one parent or guardian serving time in prison, Keeley said. That includes 23 elementary-age children and three middle schoolers.

The district does not keep a formal count and does not ask students to indicate their parents' incarceration Confinement in a jail or prison; imprisonment.

"It comes through conversations with children and parents to staff members," Keeley said.

Ortiz said she raised the issue to learn what kind of intervention, if any, is provided. Keeley said the district has no specific program for children in such circumstances, but each school offers assistance in a variety of ways - ranging from specific behavior plans to one-on-one counseling.

Ortiz seemed reassured but wondered if there's a better way to identify such children. "If we don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

The board took no action on the issue, but the discussion was timely, Superintendent Kent Hunsaker said.
