Board elects Cavanaugh CEO; declares dividend.RALEIGH, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 18, 1996--Carolina Power & Light's board of directors, meeting today in Raleigh, elected William Cavanaugh III the company's chief executive officer, succeeding Sherwood H. Smith Jr., who will step down from that position Oct. 1. The change had been announced at CP&L's annual shareholders meeting May 8. Smith, 62, made the announcement as an element of the company's overall management succession plan. Smith, who has been CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. since 1979 and chairman of the board since 1980, will continue to serve as chairman of the board of directors. Cavanaugh, 57, CP&L's president and chief operating officer Chief Operating Officer (COO) The officer of a firm responsible for day-to-day management, usually the president or an executive vice-president. , has been with the company since 1992. He came to CP&L after spending 23 years with Entergy Corp., a New Orleans-based utility holding company, and its electric utility company subsidiaries. Cavanaugh also serves on the CP&L board of directors. Cavanaugh held various positions with Entergy between 1969 and 1992. He served in executive capacities with Mississippi Power & Light in Jackson, Arkansas Power & Light and Louisiana Power & Light. His last position at Entergy was as group president-Energy Supply.
