Goodman I am asking you vote for me to the Board of Governors vacancy for the First Judicial Circuit for myriad reasons. First and foremost, I feel I am uniquely qualified to represent the attorneys in our circuit. I am actively involved with community activities, serving on numerous boards, but most importantly Adv. 1. most importantly - above and beyond all other consideration; "above all, you must be independent" above all, most especially , I have been on Florida Bar committees since I graduated from law school in 1985. I have had the privilege of chairing the Student Education and Admissions to the Bar Committee, as well as serving as vice chair of the Professionalism Committee. I am currently on the Supreme Court Professionalism Commission (where I co-chair the Attorneys Sub-committee) and the Long Range Planning In addition to my Bar activities, I teach at employment seminars and serve on the Escambia-Santa Rosa Bar Community Service Committee. One issue I seek to address on the Board of Governors is paralegal paralegal n. a non-lawyer who performs routine tasks requiring some knowledge of the law and procedures, employed by a law office or who works free-lance as an independent for various lawyers. certification. I have tried a number of complex civil trials and am very familiar with the necessity for attorneys to have qualified paralegals to assist them in their practice. Attomeys need to feel confident in the abilities of their paralegals and other nonlawyer staff. Other states have a regulation system that mandates paralegal certification and continuing education continuing education: see adult education. continuing education or adult education Any form of learning provided for adults. In the U.S. the University of Wisconsin was the first academic institution to offer such programs (1904). . Here, in Florida, the certification system is voluntary and there is no oversight over the individual programs, so attorneys hiring paralegals cannot ensure the skill levels of their employees. I support the idea of a certification program with specific guidelines for the duties that a paralegal can perform under supervision. Secondly, but certainly not less important, I have a keen interest in the matter of professionalism. Professionalism begins with the perception of the lawyer. I do not feel that the public regards us highly due to the impression the media has given. We also have problems with self-perception. In this respect, I feel that it is necessary to teach the "younger lawyers" the importance of respect for the law and the public, and, of course, the best teachers are experienced lawyers. While serving as a representative on the board, I would like to institute programs to assist younger attorneys with developing the professional ethics professional ethics, n the rules governing the conduct, transactions, and relationships within a profession and among its publics. professional ethics liability, n 1. that we all strive for. With my experience in the courtroom, the classroom, and the Bar, I feel that I have a unique perspective on the problems that face the attorneys in the First Judicial Circuit. I hope that you will vote for me as your representative. Stuart C. Poage Mr. Poage did not submit a platform statement. Woodburn S. I came to our great area as a young assistant state attorney working in Crestview and Ft. Walton Beach. I was no stranger to this wonderful piece of Florida, as I was born, raised, and educated in Pensacola. I graduated from Pensacola High School Pensacola High School is a secondary school located near downtown Pensacola, Florida, USA. The school celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2001 and graduated its 100th class of seniors in 2005; however, the school has not always been at its current location. in 1965, the University of Florida University of Florida is the third-largest university in the United States, with 50,912 students (as of Fall 2006) and has the eighth-largest budget (nearly $1.9 billion per year). Most of my personal practice has been devoted to civil and criminal trial work. I have also maintained an active workers' compensation workers' compensation, payment by employers for some part of the cost of injuries, or in some cases of occupational diseases, received by employees in the course of their work. practice, and I am a Supreme Court certified mediator. Therefore, I feel extremely qualified to represent the multiple and varied interests of all the lawyers in the First (and finest) Judicial Circuit. But, before I ask for that commitment, let me tell you I'm not happy with the current status of The Florida Bar. I strongly disagree with Verb 1. disagree with - not be very easily digestible; "Spicy food disagrees with some people" hurt - give trouble or pain to; "This exercise will hurt your back" the need, or the purpose, for the over regulation of our profession. I believe the proper role and goal of The Florida Bar should be to help improve the lawyer, his practice, and our profession as a whole. Currently, I don't see The Florida Bar meaningfully pursuing those goals. I am dismayed at what sometimes seems to be an overemphasis o·ver·em·pha·size tr. & intr.v. o·ver·em·pha·sized, o·ver·em·pha·siz·ing, o·ver·em·pha·siz·es To place too much emphasis on or employ too much emphasis. on political correctness politically correct adj. I firmly believe that we should set the standards for admission to the Bar extremely high and carefully screen each applicant to ensure that only those individuals who are morally and educationally qualified be admitted. Thereafter, the role of The Florida Bar should be to provide information and assistance to its members to help them grow individually, in their practices, and in their profession. Overwhelmingly, lawyers are good folks who, for the most part, will do the right thing on their own without the need of a regulatory body breathing down their necks. My several terms on the grievance committee convinced me that less than 5 percent of lawyers account for 75 percent or more of the misconduct. Finally, I want a Florida Bar that promotes our profession. As a workers' compensation attorney, our practice was devastated dev·as·tate tr.v. dev·as·tat·ed, dev·as·tat·ing, dev·as·tates 1. While the Academy of Florida Trial Lawyers and the Florida Workers' Advocates worked diligently to try to protect the rights of injured workers and the attorneys who represent them, The Florida Bar did little or nothing. This is just one small example of inaction. Our entire profession is under attack both on a federal and state level. The 2004 election ballot will propose several constitutional amendments that, if passed, will be devastating dev·as·tate tr.v. dev·as·tat·ed, dev·as·tat·ing, dev·as·tates 1. To lay waste; destroy. 2. Please allow me to be your representative to The Florida Bar. Hadsall My career in the field of law commenced in 1970 with the Federal Bureau of Investigation-Identification Division; since 1980 I've been a Florida attorney (discipline-free in continuous good-standing), and it is with 34 years of experience that I ask to serve on the Board of Governors to restore pride and accountability in our self-regulation. I've had 25 years of being critical and offering constructive changes to the Bar and the JQC JQC Judicial Qualifications Commission regarding their record in the area of discipline; that record represents the biggest source of discontent with self-regulation both from within as well as outside our ranks. I'd like a chance to help make our system better. That old adage of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" just isn't cutting it with many of us who play by the rules, learn from our mistakes, and wish to leave our profession better than we found it. Catherine Day Catherine Day is the current Secretary-General of the European Commission. She has been in that position since 2005 during the Barroso Commission, having previously been the Director General for the Environment. Ms. Hult My name is Catherine Day Hult, and I am seeking your vote for the Sixth Judicial Circuit Seat 1 representative to the Board of Governors of The Florida Bar. I pledge to be the voice of the 3,064 attorneys in Pinellas and Pasco counties. As Seat 1 representative, I will work closely with local attorneys and the judiciary regarding the activities, affairs, and organization of The Florida Bar. I will represent the best interests of our diverse legal community and will administer the Rules Regulating The Florida Bar in a manner reflecting the excellence and professionalism of our Sixth Circuit. As your advocate, I will offer to serve on the Board Review Committee on Professional Ethics. This committee votes on the advisory ethics and advertising opinions appealed to the board. As attorneys, our ethical benchmark is high. The decision to treat our clients, fellow attorneys, and the judiciary with dignity and respect is one of the hallmarks of our profession. I welcome the opportunity to promote the ethical practice of law in Florida while reaffirming the principles of duty and service to the public. In addition, I will offer to serve on the Rules Committee of The Florida Bar. This committee drafts and reviews changes to the Rules Regulating The Florida Bar, Standing Board Policies, and other Bar policies and regulations. These rules, policies, and regulations are a work in progress, reflecting the ever-changing needs of the 73,825 members of the Bar. As your Seat 1 representative, I will seek input from attorneys and the judiciary in the Sixth Circuit and will approve changes that promote our best interests. Actions taken by the Board of Governors affect the way we practice law on a daily basis. Would you like to see changes to the rules or other Bar policies? Do you know who to contact to have your voice heard? I promise to be accessible to each of the attorneys in the Sixth Circuit. For those who are Internet savvy, I will maintain the Web site www.YourSixthCircait.com. There will be helpful links, an event calendar, and convenient e-mail for you to contact me. For those who prefer a more traditional mode, a quarterly newsletter will be available. I look forward to being your representative, and I accept the time commitment of 200 to 300 hours per year. 1 promise that it will be time well spent when the voice of the Sixth Circuit is heard at the meetings of the Board of Governors. I would appreciate your vote. I believe the knowledge and experience gained during my recent service in the Sixth Judicial Circuit would benefit The Florida Bar Board of Governors. The Rules Regulating The Florida Bar State "[t]he purpose of The Florida Bar shall to inculcate in·cul·cate tr.v. in·cul·cat·ed, in·cul·cat·ing, in·cul·cates 1. If elected to serve on
The Florida Bar Board of Governors, I will strive to advance each
purpose of The Florida Bar. At this point in the evolution of our system
of jurisprudence, the continued assurance of an independent judiciary
should be a keystone to the perpetuation of the stated purpose of The
Florida Bar. I believe The Florida Bar should be in the vanguard of
protecting the independence of our judiciary. As officers of the court,
members of The Florida Bar can clearly understand why an independent
judiciary, free from partisan influence, is a fundamental principle of
our government. It is my belief that The Florida Bar B nard of Governors
serves an important role in the continued preservation of judicial
independence.

Horn I have had the pleasure of working as a member of the Board of Governors for the past six years. In that capacity, I have chaired and served on a number of standing committees, special commissions, and screening committees, all of which have gotten me intimately involved with the many issues affecting our members and profession today. Major topics have included: multijurisdictional practice; technological advances; professionalism; multidisciplinary practice; lawyer advertising; judicial elections; and now, the impact of Article V funding cuts. I am also presently serving on a special commission that is conducting a top-to-bottom review of our entire Bar grievance and disciplinary procedures disciplinary procedure A sanction, or restriction of the right to practice medicine, imposed on a professional . I have tried multi-million-dollar complex commercial cases as well as high-profile criminal trials that lasted more than a month. Very few individuals will have the opportunity to "manage" 300 lawyers. I have. As a result of these experiences, I am familiar with the issues affecting lawyers in small firms, large firms, and governmental offices. I know what is involved in starting up a law firm. Being a member of a minority group (and the first African-American male attorney to ever serve on the BoG) is also an asset. It causes me to view issues through different eyes than those of other governors. I think diversity among the 52-member board is essential. My breadth of experience makes me uniquely qualified to serve on the Board of Governors. I also believe it is important to give back to the community, and I have served in a variety of organizations, from chairing the 11th Circuit Judicial Nominating Commission and the Housing Finance Authority of Dade County to working as a member of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce and the Juvenile Task Force of Dade Partners for Safe Neighborhoods. In closing, I believe my background and experience demonstrate a willingness to serve and a commitment to improving our profession. I would appreciate your vote and hope that I will have the opportunity to continue serving as your representative for Seat 5 in the 11th Circuit. Henry T. I have been certified as a civil trial advocate from 1980 to the present. I have served in multiple local community and bar associations throughout my career. I have also served on numerous boards. I believe my experience has prepared me to be an effective Board of Governors representative. The key to being an effective Board of Governors representative is to be willing to listen to the issues, think concisely, act responsibly, and follow through with your decisions. The Florida Bar must address many complex issues. I am willing to work hard for the benefit of our profession and the legal system. I would welcome the opportunity to serve my colleagues on the Board of Governors and would appreciate your vote. At this time, significant issues face the Bar and Board of Governors, including: a complete review of the disciplinary system, to determine if anything needs to be modified; the regulation of advertising, considering recent court decisions broadening the permissible scope and the Bar's need to review its policies accordingly; how to support our judiciary in fending off the encroachment An illegal intrusion in a highway or navigable river, with or without obstruction. Goals for Board Service: I will bring creativity, dedication, and outspoken advocacy on behalf of Miami-Dade County lawyers in addressing the issues facing our profession and our justice system. Focus: I intend to pursue these objectives on our behalf. * Evaluating and improving the grievance system, developing user-friendly initiatives and alternative dispute mechanisms that advance the interests of the membership and the public. * Promoting technology to improve the practice and business of law, and facilitating member access to emerging technologies. * Promotion of full and fair access to our court system, and strengthening judicial independence, including significant improvements to the judicial nominating process. * Leadership training for lawyers in Bar service and to the community, including increasing Bar involvement in the election process, and community education training about our constitutional system of justice. Guillermo F. Mascaro Mr. Mascaro did not submit a platform statement. John A. I will endeavor to make certain The Florida Bar represents and reflects the interest of all of its members whether they are in-house, faculty, government, sole practitioners, or affiliated with firms. In today's climate of corporate, legal, and government scandals, it is perhaps more important than ever that the public can count on the integrity of The Florida Bar. To this end, The Florida Bar needs to continue to improve the disciplinary/grievance process so that lawyers and nonlawyers have a fair and prompt procedure they can rely upon. Further, The Florida Bar needs to enhance the public's awareness of the existing assistance programs currently in place, such as the Fee Arbitration Program, Attorney Consumer Assistance Program, and grievance mediation services that are available. Additionally, The Florida Bar took a step in the right direction by creating the Dignity in Law Program to educate the public about the positive work of Florida attorneys, but more can and should be done in this regard. The Florida Bar has been in the forefront in addressing issues such as the multijurisdictional practice of law and attorney advertising regulations, and I will work to ensure The Florida Bar continues to be proactive. Sheri Eva Nott To my colleagues: I am writing to ask for your vote. I am seeking to be elected for a seat as your representative member of The Florida Bar Board of Governors for the 11th Judicial Circuit. I would consider it to be an honor and privilege to serve in that capacity. Based on my background and experience, I believe that I can effectively represent our community in this position. In addition, I have the dedication and enthusiasm necessary for ensuring you that I will do my best job. I am committed to representing the interests of Miami and South Florida on this board. I was born and raised in Miami and have lived here my entire life (with the exception of attending college and law school). After graduating from the University of Texas in Austin (B.A.) and from the University of Florida (J.D. and LL.M LL.M Legum Magister (Master of Laws) . in taxation), I returned to my home in Miami to practice law in 1992. Since 1992, I have continuously lived and worked in Miami as an attorney. As a Miami native, I understand both our community's problems and its tremendous resources and assets. I am sensitive to many of the issues facing our multi-ethnic and diverse population and would ensure that these issues would be adequately addressed by The Florida Bar. My dedication to Miami and its people is also demonstrated by my active involvement in our local bar associations. During the past 10 years, I have been very active with the Dade County Bar Association. After serving many years as a director and officer of the board of DCBA Young Lawyers Section, I served as its president. Last year, I served as the treasurer of the "regular" DCBA board, and this year I am serving as its secretary. Through the years, I have organized and run many of the DCBA's social events to provide networking opportunities to both young and more seasoned lawyers. I have also participated in various educational and service-oriented projects run by the DCBA. I have also been actively involved in many local charity groups, such as Junior League and American Cancer Society American Cancer Society, n.pr established in 1913, this national volunteer-based health organization is committed to the elimination of cancer through prevention and treatment and to diminishing cancer suffering through advocacy, scholarship, research, . In addition to local activities, I am also a current member of the Planning Committee planning committee n (in local government) → comité m de planificación for The Florida Bar Annual Meeting in June. I am also sensitive to the needs of women lawyers and have served as a past board member of the Florida Association for Women Lawyers. In this regard, I advocate the equal and fair treatment of women, not special treatment. I would like to ensure that women have adequate representation on The Florida Board of Governors The Florida Board of Governors was created in 2003 to serve as the statewide governing body for the State University System of Florida, which includes all public universities in the state of Florida and also New College of Florida. . As for my work background, I practiced law at a large national law firm (Kelly Drye & Warren) after graduating from law school 12 years ago. Since then, I have worked at other larger law firms This list of the world's largest law firms by revenue is taken from The Lawyer and The American Lawyer and is ordered by 2006 revenue:[1]
I am ready to take on the challenge as your representative on the Board of Governors. 1 promise to continue the level of commitment I have shown with other organizations in which I have been involved. I ask that you give me this great honor. Brian Patchen I am a member of a small law firm, which represents the vast majority of lawyers who practice in this state. I am sensitive to the needs of a small law firm and single practitioner and have more than 30 years experience. While our firm has specialized in the law of eminent domain, the financial and ad administrative problems of our practice are virtually identical to those of practitioners in other fields. Having practiced in a larger from earlier in my career, I am also aware that larger firms share the same problems on a larger scale. Therefore, I believe that I can represent the interests of all lawyers. I am troubled by attacks on the legal profession and the false impression that legal fees are too high. When compared to other occupations and professions over the last 30 years, a better argument could be made that legal fees are too low. I would work to reduce or eliminate the current political practice of attacking the legal profession, particularly the trial bar. Neither political party should posture as either friend or foe of the legal profession for political gain. Our profession protects all people without regard to any other consideration. I shall dedicate my efforts to make that known and understood. My experience concerning Bar grievances has led me to believe it needs evaluation and restructuring, and if not feasible, considering a harsh undesirable alter native. I wish to understand my problem with the Bar, and correct what I can. Bluntly, I experienced a three-year attack by the Bar for politically correct inspired reasons. My and my client's rights were stepped upon. The Bar has never discussed any aspect with me beyond prosecution. I believe all humans can be biased, and Statute 38.10 requires a successor judge to state on the record that he stands fair and impartial. My client will forever believe her judge was not. I won after three years. I suffered the consequences of my client's, not my, speech. I will speak with those (or the person) who gave the "marching orders." Ivar Miles Starr Objectives of My Board Service: In this day and age when personal legal rights are being eroded by government intervention, I believe it is imperative that our members must strive to provide the utmost in competent civil, ethical, and professional legal representation. The Florida Bar is charged with the discipline of its more than 70,000 members and has appropriate procedures and rules of regulation with which its members are charged to be knowledgeable. The system is currently under scrutiny by a special com mission appointed by Bar President Miles McGrane, and once any glitches in the system are identified, they should be brought to the board and appropriately addressed. My role on the board will be to deal with the various upcoming issues of concern to my colleagues of the 11th Circuit, including: Appropriate state funding for the state court system, muitijurisdictional practice, encouraging voluntary bar associations to expand their commitment in their communities, and to make the practice of law more enjoyable. I would appreciate your vote, to be returned by March 21, 2004, for Seat 7. Joel R. Wolpe Over the past 30 years, I have practiced law in the 11th Judicial Circuit representing both plaintiffs as well as defendants in personal injury tort litigation. While my career started in a large defense firm with offices in Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties, I now practice in a small firm with five lawyers. These experiences have helped me understand the needs of lawyers practicing in both large and small firms and appreciate the diverse makeup of the lawyers practicing within the 11th Judicial Circuit. In the beginning, my philosophy was that I would leave The Florida Bar alone if it would leave me alone. But then I came to realize how important the Bar was, both to our community as well as to individual lawyers, when I served on the Unlicensed Practice of Law Committee and realized the surprising extent to which the unlicensed practice of law exists in this state. That experience reinforced my growing appreciation for the important role that The Florida Bar and its committees play in preventing significant injury to members of our community. I was then fortunate enough to be appointed to the Florida Civil Procedure Rules Committee, and I am honored to be still serving on that committee. As a trial lawyer, somehow I always believed that, regardless of changes in the law and shortcomings A shortcoming is a character flaw. Shortcomings may also be:

Our profession is currently being assailed by all sectors of society as the cause of many of our society's ills. This assault is further compounded by media coverage that reports primarily the shortcomings of our profession but fails to include the good deeds performed by my colleagues, including the judiciary. I would like to be instrumental in changing this negative perception to a positive, more realistic, one. Therefore, I would increase communication to the public about the selfless self·less adj. In addition, I would continue the efforts of The Florida Bar to promote professional conduct among our members. I have learned through my experience with The Florida Bar committees the importance of speaking up on issues that affect us all. Because I want to be able to bring that experience to The Florida Bar, I pledge to make myself available to members of the 11th Circuit who want their views on important issues presented to The Florida Bar Board of Governors. I hope that you give me the opportunity and the honor to represent the 11th Judicial Circuit. 17th Circuit, Seat 1 Alan C. Like most concerned attorneys, I believe that adequate court funding, along with the independence of our judiciary and self-regulation are the most compelling issues now confronting our profession, The continuing debate about the efficacy and limitations upon mutijurisdictional practice should likewise be of significant and urgent concern to all Florida lawyers. I have both the enthusiasm and work-ethic to make-meaningful contributions on those and other issues affecting our profession, and-t Would respectfully, welcome your support. Freeman I would welcome the opportunity and the honor of representing the attorneys of Brevard and Seminole counties of the 18th Judicial Circuit on the Board of Governors of The Florida Bar. I can assure them that I will be an active representative and will voice their concerns and opinions about our state Bar. Because few members are able to attend the meetings of The Florida Bar, communication of their opinions is critical. To receive member input requires the Board of Governors representative to be actively involved with the local bar associations. As a member of the Seminole County Bar Association since 1965, I have served in every office of the Seminole County Bar Association and have received the Thomas Whigham Award, the Williams-Johnson Award, and the Seminole County Bar Association Lifetime Achievement Award. As a member of the Brevard Bar Association, I have attended a majority of the monthly meetings during the past 16 years and have enjoyed working with its officers and directors. I think that the majority of attorneys in the 18th Judicial Circuit oppose: 1) Any increase in the Bar dues, especially in light of the fact that with 2,000 new attorneys admitted each year, Bar income increases by $500,000 plus. With $15 million in reserves, The Florida Bar doesn't need increased dues. 2) Spending $2 million on a Miami public relations firm to persuade reporters to write "feel good" articles. 3) Sending disciplinary reports about attorneys to every newspaper in Florida and boasting about how tough The Florida Bar is on its members versus doctors, CPAs, engineers, etc. I am in favor of the Board of Governors being representative of Florida attorneys, supportive of Florida attorneys, and deferential deferential /def·er·en·tial/ (-en´shal) pertaining to the ductus deferens. def·er·en·tial adj. McClelland, Jr. I am seeking re-election to represent the 18th Judicial Circuit on The Florida Bar Board of Governors. I recognize the importance of a strong and independent Bar to our profession, our system of justice, and a free society. Independence of the Judiciary: The public has not been adequately educated about their rights and responsibilities under the law, and the importance of preserving those rights. The foundation of our system of justice is the concept that our judges are impartial and decide cases on the merits on the merits adj. referring to a judgment, decision or ruling of a court based upon the facts presented in evidence and the law applied to that evidence. A judge decides a case "on the merits" when he/she bases the decision on the fundamental issues and considers . The Board of Governors and the Bar have an obligation to minimize and insulate the judiciary from partisan politics. The Bar must impart to the public an awareness that the courts cannot and should not respond to partisan attacks. The public must understand and appreciate that an independent judiciary, free of political influence, is the key to the integrity of the judicial process. The public needs to be informed that lawyers and judges Alexis de Tocqueville, 1835 Alexis de Tocqueville, a French political scientist, historian, and politician, is best known for Democracy in America (1835). A believer in democracy, he was concerned about the concentration of power in the hands of a centralized government. , rather than being a subject of criticism in our society, should be valued for the role they play in preserving our freedoms. Emphasize Membership Services: The Bar should fully develop and implement a "Texas bar style" Internet program which allows lawyers to conduct legal research, calendar their schedules, and obtain information about key legal events from their desktop computers. This program would be a service each lawyer receives for payment of his Bar dues, the same as Texas lawyers. The Bar needs to make available Internet-based courses for mandatory CLE Cle total elimination clearance. requirements to maximize the educational opportunities for busy lawyers. The focus of the "Bar should be to enhance its services to meet the professional demands of lawyers. Rules of Professional Conduct Review: I support a comprehensive review of The Florida Bar Rules of Professional Conduct and the grievance system. The purpose of the rules review should be to simplify the code of professional conduct while maintaining the core values of the legal profession.
