Today, MediaSolv announced its Bluetooth based ETHERchip(TM), which can be integrated into any appliance or device, to provide instant Internet enabled PIM (1) (Protocol Independent Multicast) A multicast routing protocol endorsed by the IETF. Used in conjunction with an existing unicast routing protocol, it comes in two flavors: Dense Mode (PIM-DM) is used when recipients in the target group are in a concentrated  (Personal Information Management) functionality. ETHERchip is a complete system on chip (SOC) with embedded processor A CPU chip used in a system other than a general purpose workstation, desktop or laptop computer. Such chips are used by the billions every year in a myriad of products. See embedded system. , memory, control circuitry, system software and Bluetooth radio for fast and secure Internet connectivity over a globally available frequency range. ETHERchip will be bundled with either bizOA(TM) or xSolv(TM), MediaSolv's server applications that will provide access to the same personal and group information management capabilities via any WEB or WAP (1) (Wireless Access Point) See access point.

(2) (Wireless Application Protocol) A standard for providing cellular phones, pagers and other handheld devices with secure access to e-mail and text-based Web pages.
device. The server side functionality is market ready and ETHERchip is currently a working prototype. Proof of concept is scheduled for June 2001. MediaSolv intends to license ETHERchip on an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  basis.

"ETHERchip's ultimate goal is to bring the benefits of the connected world of communications and collaboration to everyone, through a low cost chip that can be embedded in any appliance" said Vasee Nesiah, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of MediaSolv. "Just imagine what it would be like if the map display panel in your automobile or the television in your living room gave you instant access to the same PIM information as your PC or PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) A handheld computer for managing contacts, appointments and tasks. It typically includes a name and address database, calendar, to-do list and note taker, which are the functions in a personal information manager (see PIM). . No wires, sync procedures or complex technical issues to distract and deter as ETHERchip's Bluetooth radio will connect automatically to the Internet via any phone or PC that is within range" added Nesiah.

ETHERchip will also give manufacturers a competitive edge in the hotly contested appliances and personal device market and provide for additional revenue streams via the web. The email, scheduling and other features of the new appliance will allow the manufacturer to sustain a relationship with the customer through which to promote other products and also provide Internet based service and support.
