Bluestone Software Introduces Sapphire/Web Enhancement Pak I Increasing Developer Productivity for Large-Scale Enterprise Applications.

MOUNT LAUREL, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 17, 1997--Bluestone Software Inc. Monday introduced Sapphire/Web Enhancement Pak I bringing new features, functionality and deployment flexibility to Sapphire/Web Version 4 -- including: Sapphire/Web Universal Client and Auto Client Sensing, which allow developers to optimize productivity and Web content distribution in a heterogeneous environment Using hardware and system software from different vendors. Organizations often use computers, operating systems and databases from a variety of vendors. Contrast with homogeneous environment. ; additional wizard-based Java GUI Builder Visual programming software that lets a user build a graphical user interface by dragging and dropping elements from a toolbar onto the screen. It may be a stand-alone program or part of an application development system or client/server development system.  integrations to complementary Java tools; and updates for the latest open middleware solutions from Visigenic and Iona.

These features address the needs of enterprise developers creating large-scale data-driven applications to huge communities of users.

Today, application developers must deal with a multitude of technologies and deployment issues as they consider how to best develop and distribute content over a wide variety of devices and network infrastructures.

Faced with increasing divergence in the browser market, developers need to be able to customize their applications and the deployment of those applications on the fly. Sapphire/Web has incorporated a solution to these issues into Enhancement Pak 1.

Sapphire/Web Enhancement Pak 1 Highlights

Sapphire/Web Universal Client -- Provides the ability for applications to display a different user interface (Java, HTML HTML

Markup language derived from SGML that is used to prepare hypertext documents. Relatively easy for nonprogrammers to master, HTML is the language used for documents on the World Wide Web.
, JavaScript, JScript, ActiveX, Dynamic HTML (1) A general term for (HTML pages) Web pages that are customized for each user; for example, returning different values from a search. Contrast with a "static HTML" page, which is the same for all users. See dynamic Web page. , etc.) based on the client browser and/or browser location (Internet, intranet, extranet).

Sapphire/Web developers now can optimize delivery of their content based on attributes of the requesting browser. This functionality lays the groundwork for the future when end user environments will go beyond browsers to other types of networked devices and services.

Automatic Client Sensing -- Provides information beyond just browser type and version. With this enhancement, users can now capture details a bout the version of layered software being used, such as Java and Javascript. This is important to be able to determine if a browser supports, for example, Java's JDK (Java Development Kit) A Java software development environment from Sun. It includes the JVM, compiler, debugger and other tools for developing Java applets and applications. Each new version of the JDK adds features and enhancements to the language.  1.1.

Sapphire/Web Universal Editor -- Provides enhanced functionality to greatly ease the burden of writing Dynamic HTML (dHTML) that will work with both Netscape and IE 4.0 browsers. With this Enhancement Pak, Sapphire/Web fully supports HTML 4.0 including Cascading Style Sheets A style sheet format for HTML documents endorsed by the World Wide Web Consortium. CSS1 (Version 1.0) provides hundreds of layout settings that can be applied to all the subsequent HTML pages that are downloaded. CSS2 (Version 2.  and the new dHTML Object Model: Objects, Collections, Methods, and Properties. Also included are hundreds of new tags for Java scripting, VB scripting, I.E. 4.0 scriptlets, and more.

Added Java GUI Builder Integrations to Client Objects Framework -- Sapphire/Web continues its leadership position in creating a plug-and-play environment that is open to a variety of tools by integrating the following Java GUI Builders into our Client Objects Framework:

Visual J++ 1.0 and 1.1

Visual Cafe A family of Java development products formerly from the WebGain division of Symantec and sold to TogetherSoft Corporation in 2002, which was acquired by Borland in 2003. Versions for Windows and the Macintosh were available that included a host of Java components and features for rapidly  1.0 and 2.0

The Sapphire/Web Java Class Wizard allows data exchange with arbitrary components, including Beans. This provides users a very robust Java development environment that works in close concert with Sapphire/Web to create enterprise-level Java-to-database applications.

Support for latest release of Visigenic Visibroker and Iona Orbix/Web -- Provides compatability with the Visibroker 3.0 and the Orbix/Web 3.0 releases. Sapphire/Web continues to bundle Visibroker for Java free of charge, so that out-of-the-box without any configuration hassles, developers can immediately develop, deploy, and manage enterprise-scale Web applications using Java and IIOP (Internet Inter-ORB Protocol) The CORBA message protocol used on a TCP/IP network (Internet, intranet, etc.).
