Bluestone Announces Immediate Availability of Sapphire/Web 3.0 in support of the Network Computing World.

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 11, 1996--

Interactive Java-to-Database development gives "thin clients" the power for enterprise intranet and worldwide Internet applications

Bluestone bluestone, common name for the blue, crystalline heptahydrate of cupric sulfate called chalcanthite, a minor ore of copper. It also refers to a fine-grained, light to dark colored blue-gray sandstone. (R) Inc. announced Wednesday major enhancements to Sapphire/Web(TM) 3.0.

This new release leverages the Web's Network Computing Storing and/or running applications in servers in a network. See cloud computing and network computer.  Model (NCM NCM National Corvette Museum (Bowling Green, Kentucky)
NCM Nordic Council of Ministers
NCM New California Media
NCM Nomenclatura Común del Mercosur
NCM Non-Commissioned Member (Canadian Military)
) embraced by key industry players, including Sun, Microsoft, Netscape, Oracle, and IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) .

Sapphire/Web is the first product to provide the data-enabled Java, JavaScript, ActiveX, and VBScript clients required for delivering highly usable NCM applications that leverage low-cost, easy-to-manage clients while delivering robust departmental and enterprise-wide applications.

"The challenge for users is to find tools that support the new NCM," said Bob Bickel, director and general manager of Bluestone's Product Division. "Existing Web development tools deal only with the server, which is a good start, but it doesn't address the client side requirements.

"On the other hand, the new Java-based client tools are outstanding for creating the client GUI (Graphical User Interface) A graphics-based user interface that incorporates movable windows, icons and a mouse. The ability to resize application windows and change style and size of fonts are the significant advantages of a GUI vs. a character-based interface.  and logic, but require time-consuming, low-level coding to connect with the database. Plus, when deployed standalone, they recreate the same 'fat' client environment that gave client/server such a bad name.

"What's needed is a tool that data-enables client applications, handles the server-side requirements -- such as application logic and database access -- and ties everything together. With Sapphire/Web, developers can deliver affordable, easy-to-manage business applications."

New Sapphire/Web enhancements include:

-- The framework to build enterprise wide (intranet) and worldwide (Internet) applications, using Interactive Java. By placing more processing power across the network, users get the interactivity, high performance, and cost-effectiveness to handle the most demanding tasks.

-- Integration with leading Java development tools like Microsoft's Visual J++ and Symantec's Visual Cafe A family of Java development products formerly from the WebGain division of Symantec and sold to TogetherSoft Corporation in 2002, which was acquired by Borland in 2003. Versions for Windows and the Macintosh were available that included a host of Java components and features for rapidly . Instead of hand-coding, robust Java database applications can be developed using visual tools.

-- An easy-to-use Java wizard that speeds development.

-- Data-enabled client frameworks that go far beyond static-enabled HTML HTML

-- Powerful server-side enhancements, including CGI CGI

Online, when it comes to the Network Computing architecture, client-side processing is critical to maximize the usability and sheer speed of an application. "CBS News deployed a Sapphire/Web based application to deliver real-time election results. The site took over 11 million 'hits' the night of the election.

"One of the highly regarded features was an interactive map of the United States-implemented in JavaScript. This client-side implementation changed the name of the state as a user put their cursor over each state on the map. The Network Computing Model, supported by Sapphire/Web, readily supported this type of interactive user interface."

"1996 has been characterized by aggressive adoption of Inter/intranet technologies across G2000 organizations. Much of this development has focused on document publishing or forms-based database query," said Alexis DePlanque, senior research analyst, META Group.

"Over the next two years we expect to see a dramatic maturation of the market to incorporate more integrated, interactive applications via the Web. These solutions will necessitate the use of more complex architectures, intelligently partitioning data and logic between server and client depending on the application.

"Successful solution providers will be able to support these applications with flexible robust environments which are equally capable in server-centric, client-centric or hybrid implementations."

SAPPHIRE/WEB: THE ONLY DEVELOPMENT TOOL THAT DOES NOT CHARGE RUN-TIME FEES

Sapphire/Web 3.0 is being offered with a no run-time fee application server. This is unique among Web development tools, which charge a run-time fee for each server.

SUPPORT FOR ALL MAJOR NC INITIATIVES

As an open, "Native Web" tool, Sapphire/Web 3.0 currently supports all of the recently-announced NC initiatives, including:

-- Oracle Network Computer & Network Computing Architecture

-- Sun (Sun Java Desktop, Sun Java Web Server A Web server from Sun that ran under Solaris and NT. It supported Java servlets and JavaServer Pages (JSP) technology. Version 2.0 was the final release of the product, which was created to provide an upgrade path to servlet processing (Servlet API 2.1) for prior Java Web Server customers. , Sun Java Station)

-- IBM Network Station

-- Microsoft & Intel Network PC

-- Integration with leading third party Java Object Vendors like KL Group, Visual Jclass, Olectra Chart, InfoSpace Java Graphing, and Microsoft Excel (tool) Microsoft Excel - A spreadsheet program from Microsoft, part of their Microsoft Office suite of productivity tools for Microsoft Windows and Macintosh. Excel is probably the most widely used spreadsheet in the world.

Latest version: Excel 97, as of 1997-01-14.

CGI or APIs AT THE "FLIP OF A SWITCH"

Additional functionality included in Sapphire/Web 3.0 includes a CGI and API "flip of a switch" capability. Developers merely have to "flip a switch" to have their application support Oracle's WRB-API, Netscape's NSAPI (NetScape API) A programming interface on Netscape's Web Server. Using NSAPI function calls, Web pages can invoke programs on the server, typically to access data in a database. NSAPI is an alternative to using CGI scripts on Netscape Web servers. , Microsoft's ISAPI (Internet Server API) A programming interface on Internet Information Services (IIS), Microsoft's Web server. Using ISAPI function calls, Web pages can invoke programs that are written as DLLs on the server, typically to access data in a database. , CGI, or Open Market's FastCGI. This solves the challenge of being locked into a deployment scheme during the development phase.

In fact, a mixture of different APIs could be used as the application is deployed over different vendor's Web servers. Sapphire/Web 3.0 is available in beta immediately and can be downloaded from http://www.bluestone.com. Ship date will be in Q1 1997. The price is $2,995 with one full year of support.

For Web developers, Sapphire/Web is the Web- and Java-to-database development tool that makes it easy to create high-performance Internet/intranet applications. Unlike other tools that deliver server-side only solutions and technology lock-in, Sapphire/Web offers Java client and server-side business logic in an open approach giving you the choice of Java, ActiveX and the security and scalability to meet the most demanding tasks.

A graphical toolset, wizards and the choice of APIs or CGI provide ease of use, flexibility and a robust development environment. Additionally, Sapphire/Web includes a framework that generates database-enabled Java and ActiveX code with little or no programming.

This client-side processing of Java and ActiveX, or Client Objects, allows fast, easy visual development of powerful Internet/intranet applications that leverage back end databases and application objects.
