Blueslice Selects GoAhead to Reduce Time-to-Market for new HLR/SCP.

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

BELLEVUE, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 17, 2003

GoAhead to provide commercial, off-the-shelf high availability Also called "RAS" (reliability, availability, serviceability) or "fault resilient," it refers to a multiprocessing system that can quickly recover from a failure. There may be a minute or two of downtime while one system switches over to another, but processing will continue.

middleware to accelerate development of new scaleable SIP HLR/SCP

GoAhead(R) Software today announced the selection of its SelfReliant(R) availability management middleware by Blueslice Networks Inc.

Blueslice chose SelfReliant to deliver the high availability component of their NEBS3-compliant SIP HLR/SCP(TM) for wireless operators.

GoAhead provides the availability and management middleware that is critical to meet Blueslice's 99.999% availability requirement, which is less than five minutes of downtime per year. Blueslice's product unites an HLR (Home Location Register) A database in a cellular system that contains all the subscribers within the provider's home service area. When a subscriber reaches a new service area, the data in the HLR is requested and transferred via SS7 to the VLR (Visitor Location  and SCP (1) (Service Control Point) A node in an SS7 telephone network that provides an interface to databases, which may reside within the SCP computer or in other computers.  into one chassis running specialized SIP and MAP software optimized for wireless network operators. The NEBS3-compliant SIP HLR/SCP(TM) works on all phones on all networks.

"Because time-to-market is extremely important to Blueslice, when possible, we opt to use off-the-shelf components to build our new system," said Louis Barbeau, vice president of R&D for Blueslice. "SelfReliant will save us months of development time -- time that we are using more productively to develop our own unique HLR/SCP application."

Blueslice's Mobile SIP HLR/SCP leverages a hardened NEBS3-certified Compact PCI (1) (Payment Card Industry) See PCI DSS.

(2) (Peripheral Component Interconnect) The most widely used I/O bus (peripheral bus).

Unix servers are widely used as application servers and database servers and are available from a variety of vendors, including Sun, IBM, HP and others.  and GoAhead SelfReliant to ensure no single point of failure. SelfReliant runs as the high availability (HA) middleware layer on top of the Mobile SIP server's Solaris operating system, enabling the server to perform mobile registration, routing and security enforcement without downtime. The Blueslice platform connects third-party applications on the server directly in the form of plug-ins, on a server platform running on a separate CPU CPU

, or remotely.

"Many network equipment and application providers are moving away from in-house development of HA software," said Paul Zoba, vice president of marketing at GoAhead Software. "Blueslice is a good example of a company that consciously decided to purchase the HA middleware component, so they could spend their limited engineering resources on creating an innovative new SIP HLR/SCP product."

More about GoAhead SelfReliant

SelfReliant runs as a middleware layer on top of the operating system to manage redundant components for 99.999% availability and reliability. It features 2-3 millisecond One thousandth of a second. See space/time and ohnosecond.

(unit) millisecond - (ms) One thousandth of a second, one thousand microseconds. A long time for a modern computer.
failover speeds, checkpointing to preserve application data, and over 38,000 per second distributed message delivery. Real-time capture, storage and replication of system and/or application data assure continuous, uninterrupted service. Its compact footprint (less than 4.5 MB) and low CPU usage (less than 3% of CPU capacity) are ideal for the tight resource constraints typical of embedded systems. External management is conducted either through a web console or network management via SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc. . The modular design supports building solutions with off-the-shelf components and little to no integration. Its flexibility also allows phasing in high availability functionality over multiple releases. For projects that require full HA at first release, GoAhead SelfReliant Suite is pre-integrated for fast, easy deployment. GoAhead offers a range of packages to make getting started with SelfReliant easy and quick. SelfReliant is available for free 60-day trial download at www.goahead.com/products/eval_download.htm.
