Mind, at the Shipley Art Gallery The Shipley Art Gallery is an art gallery situated in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear. It is at the north end of Prince Consort Road, near to Shipcote. Origins The Shipley Art Gallery first opened to the public in 1917. , in Gateshead, brings together a range of artists who dealt with depression in their work. It aims to offer an insight into the experience of depression 200 years ago. Artists featured in the display include William Hogarth, Joshua Reynolds Sir Joshua Reynolds RA FRS FRSA (16 July 1723 – 23 February 1792) was the most important and influential of 18th century English painters, specializing in portraits and promoting the "Grand Style" in painting which depended on idealization of the imperfect. , George Romney, Thomas Rowlandson, William Blake, John Constable and local artist Luke Clennell. Curator Amy Barker said: "This exhibition offers a fascinating insight into the minds of artists and the people they painted and into the whole phenomenon of melancholy."
