BLUES' new owners' determination to embrace the past was given a seal of approval by Gil Merrick Gilbert 'Gil' Harold Merrick (26 January, 1922 - ) is an English footballer and football manager.

Considered one of the best goalkeepers in the UK during the mid-1950s, Gil was one in a long line of great Birmingham City keepers which included the likes of Johnny Schofield

The former goalkeeping great and League Cup-winning manager opened the Legends Lounge in the Kop stand before yesterday's match against Manchester City.

And its very unveiling once again underlined the wind of change that has been blowing through St Andrew's as the executive area was formerly known as the Gold Suite, after former chairman David Gold
