Blue Wave's New ComStruct DSP Platform Provides High Density Voice/Fax/Data Over IP in CompactPCI.

Blue Wave Systems Inc (NASDAQ/NMS: BWSI) new CPCI/C5420 ComStruct(TM) digital signal processor (DSP) platform, based on Texas Instruments' market leading TMS320C54x(TM) DSP Generation, provides telecom system providers with the very high levels of processing power they need to deliver carrier class voice, fax and data services to their enterprise and service provider customers, while also shortening their development cycle time and risk. The board, featuring 20 programmable TMS320C5420 DSPs and four PowerQUICC(TM) microprocessors, is designed to run Telogy's Golden Gateway(R) software package, providing more than 120 channels of simultaneous voice, fax, or data over Internet Protocol (VoIP) calls in one CompactPCI slot (Compact Peripheral Component Interconnects, aka CPCI).

The Golden Gateway software package from Telogy Networks, a Texas Instruments Company (NYSE: TXN), provides a complete Voice/Fax/Data over IP (V/F/DoIP) software solution, including integrated H.323 and MGCP stacks. The new board is also able to accommodate a module with four StrongARM(R) SA-110 processors architected for use with Telogy's GoldenPort software, which enables carrier-class equipment to offload voice, fax and V.90 modem calls from the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) to data networks (IP, FR, and ATM) thereby giving service providers a single class of equipment able to handle voice, fax, or data calls.

The StrongARM processors provide the additional processing power required for modem applications and when fitted with them the CPCI/C5420 is able to support more than 120 channels of Universal Port (voice, fax or V90 modem calls).

The CPCI/C5420 is a full-length 6U CPCI board with a hot swap 'friendly' PCI interface. The board's DSPs, PowerQUICC and StrongARM processors are split into four processing blocks for optimum performance, with each block comprising one PowerQUICC, five C5420 DSPs, an optional StrongARM processor, up to 64Mbytes of SDRAM and a 10/100 Base-TX Ethernet interface. A module fitted to the board's open standard PMC site allows direct connection to up to 4 T1 or 4 E1 network interfaces, or system integrators may use the site to add alternative interfaces such as ATM. A bidirectional ECTF H.110 bus connection is provided via the Compact PCI J4 connector.

The combined voice and fax solution will be available to customers in the 2nd quarter of 2000, with additional GoldenPort data modem termination software available in the third quarter. Pricing for 100K ports of compressed voice/fax over IP (including hardware, software and patent licenses) will be from $40 - $60 per port depending on interface choice. Future releases of the product will support TI's eXpressDSP(TM) real-time software technology.
