 Help Conference - Blue Sky Software announced today the next generation of Help tools with its new Moving-to-HTML-Help tool optimized for Windows 95 and Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking. .

With the new Moving-to-HTML-Help tool, Help authors can easily move from Windows Help Microsoft WinHelp is a proprietary format for online help files that can be displayed by the Microsoft Help browser winhelp.exe or winhlp32.exe. The file format is based on Rich Text Format (RTF). It remained a popular Help platform from Windows 3.  to HTML based Help with just one mouse click. Moving-to-HTML-Help automatically converts any Windows 3.1, Windows 95, and Windows NT Help files into HTML based Help files. Moving-to-HTML-Help fully supports the emerging HTML based Help standards: Microsoft HtmlHelp and Netscape NetHelp.

AutoUpdate Program

Microsoft and Netscape unveiled today to the public the initial specifications for the new HTML based Help formats, HtmlHelp and NetHelp. However, these new specifications will be modified by Microsoft and Netscape before being finalized See finalization.  and available for commercial use. As the specifications evolve, Blue Sky Software's new AutoUpdate Program will provide up-to-date versions of the Moving-to-HTML-Help technology to match the changing specifications from Microsoft and Netscape.

The new AutoUpdate Program is now available for FREE to all registered users of the new Moving-to-HTML-Help, RoboHELP 4.0, and WinHelp Office 4.0. Using the World Wide Web, the AutoUpdate Program allows registered users to receive the latest version of Moving-to-HTML-Help along with any important news on the HTML based Help formats. The AutoUpdate Program will allow Help authors to easily create HTML based Help files that meet the most recent HTML based Help specifications.

The AutoUpdate Program for Moving-to-HTML-Help is included in the new Moving-to-HTML kit. In addition to Moving-to-HTML-Help, the Moving-to-HTML Kit also includes Help-to-HTML version 3.2 and the book Mastering HTML for Help Authors.

HTML based Help

An HTML based Help engine will not replace Windows Help but will create a new Help authoring alternative that will live side-by-side with the current RTF (Rich Text Format) A document format from Microsoft for encoding text and graphics. It was adapted from IBM's DCA format and supports ANSI, IBM PC and Macintosh character sets.  based Help standard. The emerging Microsoft HtmlHelp format is based on a compressed single file, similar to a current Windows Help file but resulting from the compilation Compiling a program. Standard HTML authoring tools will not provide adequate support for the tags and HTML extensions needed for HTML based Help authoring. However, Blue Sky Software's Moving-to-HTML-Help (available now) as well as RoboHELP 4.0 and WinHelp Office 4.0 (both shipping October 1996) provide the tools needed to quickly and easily create HTML based Help files while still supporting WinHelp (RTF based Help).
