Blue Seal acquires Mass. competitor.


Londonderry-based feed supplier Blue Seal Inc. has purchased United Cooperative Farmers Inc., a Fitchburg, Mass.-based competitor, for an undisclosed amount.

The acquisition comes on the heels of another deal, which took place in February, when Blue Seal acquired I.L. Richer Company of Sangerfield, N.Y., a company specializing in dairy feeds.

The February merger resulted in the spinoff of a new company, Blue Seal Richer Dairy Nutrition. UCF UCF University of Central Florida

 will become a part of this new entity.

UCF operates mills in Fitchburg, Mass., and Auburn, Maine Auburn is a city in and the county seat of Androscoggin CountyGR6, Maine, United States. It is one of two principal cities of and included in the Lewiston-Auburn, Maine Metropolitan New England City and Town Area and the Lewiston-Auburn, Maine .

It is bordered by Massachusetts (S), Vermont, with the Connecticut R. forming the boundary (W), the Canadian province of Quebec (NW), and Maine and a short strip of the Atlantic Ocean (E).  Agriculture Commissioner Lorraine Merrill said that there is excess plant capacity in New Hampshire and New England. "There certainly have been changes in the dairy industry, but the poultry business has declined sharply in New Hampshire and in the region from what it was," Merrill said.

According to the Agriculture Department, Blue Seal will likely close the Fitchburg operation--one of the oldest feed mills in New England--laying off about 20 employees, including CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization.
