There may not be a Red Sox fan alive that saw a Boston team play a game with as many bad players on the field as in last night's 12-0 loss to the Blue Jays.

The Sox were outhit, 17-3. Their top offensive player was Joey Gathright Joey Renard Gathright (born April 27, 1981 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi) is a Major League Baseball player for the Kansas City Royals. They wound up using catcher Dusty Brown to pitch the top of the ninth, with Rocco Baldelli Rocco Dan Baldelli (born September 25, 1981 in Woonsocket, Rhode Island) is a Major League Baseball player for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Baldelli is a New England area fan favorite and is known for his outstanding speed and throwing ability. His natural position is center field.  at third base. Brown became only the second player in franchise history to catch and pitch in the same season. Jack Rothrock, the ultimate utility player, had one game at each position in 1928.

"Any time we get to Dusty Brown pitching, that's a tough night," Francona said.

Boston has lost six straight. It was swept by Toronto in this three-game series and its pitchers gave up 13 home runs. The Sox were outscored, 31-12, in the three games.

Tim Wakefield Timothy Stephen Wakefield (born August 2, 1966 in Melbourne, Florida) is a right-handed knuckleball pitcher in Major League Baseball who has played with the Boston Red Sox since 1995.  started for Boston and made what is almost certainly his final appearance of 2009. Given his age and the fact that he will require surgery on his back this winter, there has to be some question as to whether he has made his final appearance, period, for the Red Sox.

Wakefield pitched three innings and allowed seven hits and five runs. He is 0-2 and has allowed 13 earned runs in 14 innings in his last three starts.

"He wanted to stay in there," Francona said, "but that was not in his best interests."

"I don't want to give up on the team," is how Wakefield answered questions about why he keeps on pitching. "I feel like I'm needed."

Francona declined to address the team's postseason plans for Wakefield.

"If I'm with the team, great. I'll give it everything I have," the pitcher said. "If not, I'll be the biggest cheerleader in the dugout."
