Blue Heron's Big DNA Contest: 40kb Free Gene Synthesis.

Health/Medical Writers

BOTHELL, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 27, 2004

Blue Heron blue heron
n.
Any of several varieties of heron with blue or blue-gray plumage.
(R) Biotechnology, Inc. announced today its Big DNA DNA: see nucleic acid.
DNA
 or deoxyribonucleic acid

One of two types of nucleic acid (the other is RNA); a complex organic compound found in all living cells and many viruses. It is the chemical substance of genes.
contest. The winner will design a 40,000 base pair synthetic DNA fragment (1) In networking, one piece of a data packet that has been broken into smaller pieces in order to accommodate the maximum transmission unit (MTU) size of a network. See IP fragmentation.  and receive free synthesis of the DNA by Blue Heron. Blue Heron's research and development team is developing a new technology for assembly of 20kb to 40kb fragments and needs an interesting test case. The contest has two goals:

1. To encourage scientists to consider the potential impact of large synthetic DNA fragments on their research strategies, and

2. To test Blue Heron's proprietary new gene assembly technology.

The winning project must be scientifically interesting, produce a clone clone, group of organisms, all of which are descended from a single individual through asexual reproduction, as in a pure cell culture of bacteria. Except for changes in the hereditary material that come about by mutation, all members of a clone are genetically  that is of value to a range of researchers, and show a strong technical advantage for synthesizing this clone.

Applications should:

1. Briefly describe your research,

2. Explain the use of the 40kb clone in your research,

3. Describe the clone's value to the research community,

4. Outline the technical advantages of synthesis, and

5. Be submitted to bigdna@blueheronbio.com by June June: see month.  30, 2004. Applications should not exceed two pages. Please include your full contact information (name, organization, phone, e-mail, address).

Eligibility

-- Pathogens are not eligible for this contest.

-- Blue Heron may reject applications for any reason and without

explanation.

-- If no suitable application is received, Blue Heron may elect

not to award the prize.

-- The sequence may be published by Blue Heron.

-- Blue Heron reserves the right to distribute the clone.

-- The winner may be asked to make minor changes in the sequence.

About Blue Heron Biotechnology

Blue Heron Biotechnology, Inc., the leading provider of gene synthesis Gene synthesis is the process of synthesizing an artificially designed gene into a physical DNA sequence.

Gene synthesis was first demonstrated by Har Gobind Khorana in 1970 for a short artificial gene.
services, was founded in 1999 to accelerate discovery research by industrializing the manufacture of custom reagents. Blue Heron's proprietary GeneMaker(R) synthesizes any gene, regardless of sequence or size with 100% sequence fidelity guaranteed. Today hundreds of researchers from pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies Top 100 Biotechnology Companies
