Blue Cross Blue Shield of Missouri Sponsors 'Encore Tour' Wellness Seminars at African-American Churches.


ST. LOUIS -- Encouraged by the success of its recent "1st Annual Blue Cross Blue Shield Blue Shield A US not-for-profit health care insurer that is a reimbursement intermediary for physicians. Cf Blue Cross.  of Missouri (BCBSMo) Health and Wellness Church Tour," the company is sponsoring three additional health and wellness seminars at St. Louis-area African-American churches this fall.

More than 2,700 people attended the five church wellness events held between mid-July and early August of this year. About 300 were screened for blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes. Of this number, 60 people discovered a previously unknown health condition and were advised to see their physicians.

, host of Gospel 1600's "Health Connections" radio program, is the planner for the seminars. "Our goal is to continue to bring the message of health and wellness to the people, and to provide education on the importance of obtaining health exams, preventive care and early detection of disease and illness," Troupe said. "This summer, we found that we can receive the undivided attention of church congregations through our outreach program."

"We are dedicated to educating the African-American community about health issues that concern them," said John Seidenfeld, M.D., vice president and medical director at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Missouri. "We want to emphasize personal health responsibility as an important issue among African-American populations. Statistics show that minorities are affected by chronic diseases and health conditions, such as diabetes and high blood pressure at far higher rates than other populations. We want to provide health care information that our African-American community can use and take home with them."

The programs feature speakers, health screenings, entertainment, lunch and refreshments.

Through its Stepping Stones program, BCBSMo is working with the African-American community and its business leaders to educate and inform this community about its health care needs. BCBSMo is also a corporate sponsor of the Salute to Excellence program, a series of events hosted by the St. Louis African-American community in business, health care and education.
