Blu Pharmaceuticals is a generic pharmaceutical company located in Franklin, Kentucky that manufactures and markets high quality generic pharmaceuticals, distributed through major wholesalers. Blu has experienced rapid growth, driven in part by a Federal Supply Schedule (FSS) contract that permits government agencies such as the Veterans Administration Bureau of Prisons and Indian Health Services to purchase its prescription drug products.

Blu's initial use of paper pedigrees to track the chain of custody of prescription medications encountered a number of shortcomings.
