Blown film auto-gauging uses physical actuators.

Mechanically rather than thermally actuated ac·tu·ate
tr.v. ac·tu·at·ed, ac·tu·at·ing, ac·tu·ates
1. To put into motion or action; activate: electrical relays that actuate the elevator's movements.

die lips are used for gauge control in pipe extrusion and have been tried from time to time in blown film as well. The latest effort in that direction is the new I-Flex Die Lip from Brampton Engineering Inc., Brampton, Ont. It was designed to control gauge on Brampton's water-quenched AquaFrost system because the output is so high that it can't be controlled with conventional thermal die-lip or air-ring controls. Aquafrost freezes the film too soon after it leaves the die for a thermal die lip to work, and the blow-up ratio is too small for air-ring adjustments to work.

The new physical actuator A mechanism that causes a device to be turned on or off, adjusted or moved. The motor and mechanism that moves the head assembly on a disk drive or an arm of a robot is called an actuator. See access arm.  technology is Brampton's first die-based gauge control. I-Flex uses one actuator for approximately every 4 in. of die circumference. Brampton says it controls film gauge at high outputs with accuracy of [+ or -]4% to 6% at 2 Sigma SIGMA - A scientific visual programming environment from NASA.
