Bloomington Economic Development Corp.: Bloomington cultivates technology companies.


BUILDING ON THE STRENGTHS OF Indiana University Indiana University, main campus at Bloomington; state supported; coeducational; chartered 1820 as a seminary, opened 1824. It became a college in 1828 and a university in 1838. The medical center (run jointly with Purdue Univ.  and leveraging the resources and expertise of local entrepreneurs, Bloomington is emerging as a leader in technology development. Local economic development initiatives have recently led to the formation of a venture capital fund, the development of local technology infrastructure, plans for a technology incubator incubator, apparatus for the maintenance of controlled conditions in which eggs can be hatched artificially. Incubator houses with double walls of mud, a fireroom, and several compartments each holding about 6,000 hens' eggs were developed in ancient times; the , and enhancements to the entrepreneurial culture. Bloomington Economic Development Corp. has served as a catalyst for long-term economic development and program planning that also includes support for business clusters A business cluster is a geographic concentration of interconnected businesses, suppliers, and associated institutions in a particular field. Clusters are considered to increase the productivity with which companies can compete, nationally and globally. , including the Bloomington Life Sciences Partnership and the Bloomington Information Technology Sector.

Bloomington Life Sciences Partnership--The Bloomington Life Sciences Partnership was formed in 2002 by Bloomington Mayor John Fernandez to bring together the leaders of local life science, medical and health-related entities for collaboration. The Partnership serves as a conduit conduit /con·du·it/ (kon´doo-it) channel.

Members of the Partnership represent area businesses including: Cook, Baxter, Biomedix, Boston Scientific The Boston Scientific Corporation (NYSE: BSX) (abbreviated BSC), is a worldwide developer, manufacturer and marketer of medical devices whose products are used in a range of interventional medical specialties, including interventional cardiology, peripheral interventions,  and KP Pharmaceuticals.

Other members include: Indiana University, Ivy Tech IVY TECH Ivy Tech State College (Indiana Vocational Technical College System)  State College, Johnson Center for Entrepreneurship, the Midwest Proton Radiotherapy radiotherapy /ra·dio·ther·a·py/ (-ther´ah-pe) treatment of disease by means of ionizing radiation; tissue may be exposed to a beam of radiation, or a radioactive element may be contained in devices (e.g.  Institute, Bloomington Hospital and Healthcare System, Internal Medicine Associates, the City of Bloomington, Monroe County Monroe County is the name of seventeen counties in the United States, named after President James Monroe:
  • Monroe County, Alabama
  • Monroe County, Arkansas
  • Monroe County, Florida
  • Monroe County, Georgia
  • Monroe County, Illinois
  • Monroe County, Indiana
 and the Bloomington Economic Development Corp.

The Partnership is working to identify local competencies, form a bridge to commercialization, develop a technology incubator/accelerator, emphasize research at Indiana University and enhance seed and venture capital fund efforts.

Bloomington Information Technology Sector (BITS)--The Bloomington Information Technology Sector (BITS) was formed in 1998 and includes representatives from over forty local information technology companies.

BITS provides a forum for networking and collaboration. Participating companies have partnered on a number of projects including joint participation in trade shows, marketing, and support of public investments in technology. BITS members participate in TechPoint's monthly New Economy/New Rules seminars.

The presence of Indiana University in Bloomington has led to the availability of a talented labor force that is entrepreneurial in nature. Over 70 percent of the information technology companies in Bloomington have a direct connection to IU. Many of the companies were started by IU graduates or faculty.
