Bloomingdale, which is more than 100 years old, began their network transition with the construction of new outside plant facilities. The company expects to begin turning up service in the second quarter of 2005. "We knew we wanted to use IP and Gigabit Ethernet to connect our remote terminals, and we also needed to add copper lines," said Dan Key, facilities manager for Bloomingdale. "The BLC 6000 offered us the flexibility to support our extensive fiber network and our new and existing copper infrastructure using Gigabit Ethernet for transport. We really like the versatility of the Occam BLC." Bloomingdale selected the Occam BLC 6000 from among products offered from eight manufacturers. "We based our selection on the functionality of the product, the services the product would enable us to deliver and the experience and reputation of the company with whom we would be working," said Key. Although the IOC also owns a cable TV company, they plan to deliver IP video over their copper telephone plant to reach customers they are unable to reach currently through the cable TV affiliate. Key continued, "We know that we can reach more customers with more services by switching to an IP/Ethernet network -- and that's the ultimate goal. With the Occam BLC we are positioned to deliver IP video, VoIP and whatever new service comes along. And, we can deliver these services for less cost and with the same degree of reliability." "We are pleased to support Bloomingdale in their transition to an IP- and Gigabit Ethernet-based network that provides them with the flexibility they need to offer new services that will help to grow their subscriber base," said Russ Sharer, vice president of sales and marketing for Occam. "We look forward to working with them and helping them to achieve their goals of a next-generation network that equals those of much bigger competitors." About Bloomingdale Telephone Co.
