Bloomberg taking more control of downtown redevelopment.


Mayor Michael Bloomberg Michael Rubens Bloomberg (born 14 February 1942) is an American businessman, and the founder of Bloomberg L.P., currently serving as the Mayor of New York City. Whitehead, speaking at a Real Estate Board luncheon two weeks ago, denied reports that there was a power struggle between city and state agencies over control of the site. This news doesn't contradict Whitehead--however, it does suggest that Bloomberg is vying for a bigger piece of the action downtown.

"At the end of the day, the mayor and the governor are responsible, and we're proud to have that responsibility," said Gov. Pataki at the press conference.

In the six months that have passed since Sept. 11, workers have cleared the site of debris and are now excavating the concourse area beneath the site. All but four subway stations have been reopened here, with the other four expected to open next fall.

On that score, extensive upgrades to the existing mass transit system are in the works

"Our goal is to enhance downtown as the center of the financial world. And that means bringing the Long Island Railroad into lower Manhattan. As for the 1 and 9 subway lines, they should be open by December," said Carl Weisbrod, president of the Alliance for Downtown New York, a Business Improvement District.
