Bloomberg Stars in Israel


Over the weekend, Michael Bloomberg Michael Rubens Bloomberg (born 14 February 1942) is an American businessman, and the founder of Bloomberg L.P., currently serving as the Mayor of New York City. He was a general partner at Salomon Brothers before founding the financial software service company in 1981.  put himself on the international stage with a one-day trip to Israel, where he met with Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, and distributed dolls to children injured in·jure

It was his first trip to Israel in two years.

Bloomberg traveled with New York City Police Commissioner The New York City Police Commissioner is the head of the New York City Police Department, appointed by the Mayor of New York City. Governor Theodore Roosevelt, in one of his final acts before becoming Vice President of the United States in March 1901, signed legislation replacing  Ray Kelly There have been a number of people named Ray Kelly:
  • Raymond W. Kelly, the current New York Police Commmissioner
  • Ray "Gunner" Kelly, a 20th century Sydney police detective
  • Ray Kelly (sportswriter) (1914-1988)
 and Representative Gary Ackerman, who represents parts of Queens and Long Island.

Democratic political consultant Evan Stavisky said the trip was "a personal statement" for Bloomberg and "obviously smart politics--particularly when you bring the Congress' 'Maven of the Middle East' and the police commissioner. It's one of those times when the right thing to do is also the right political thing to do."

During a press conference in Ashkelon, Bloomberg told reporters it was important that he and others visit the country now. "For the people of Israel it says that others care," and that, "If we don't stand up against terrorists we're going to be victims ourselves."
