THERE has been much discussion in how to quantify the Trakehner as a breed.

Trakehners UK Chairman David Clark David Clark or Dave Clark can refer to different people:
  • David Clark (cartoonist), an illustrator
  • David Clark (cricketer), a former English cricketer
  • David Clark (guitar player), an American guitar player, folklorist, and newspaper columnist
 explains the origins and present European breeding programme.

"We all hear from time to time of breeds of horse, sometimes without realising exactly what is meant by the words and what is behind the breeding programmes that led to the horse we are looking at. The Trakehner is a prime example. The word is Tra-kay-ner and it actually describes where the horses originally came from in Trakehnen in the now non-existent East Prussia East Prussia, Ger. Ostpreussen, former province of Prussia, extreme NE Germany. The region of East Prussia has low rolling hills that are heavily wooded, and it is dotted by many lakes (especially in Masuria). .

"The original Trakehner breed traces back to the first official foundation of a breeding program A breeding program is the planned breeding of a group of animals or plants, usually involving at least several individuals and extending over several generations. Breeding programs are commonly employed in several fields where humans wish to manage the characteristics of their  in 1732.

"This set a breeding programme using a closed stud book. That means the sole use of the local horses plus the other closed stud books, the English Thoroughbred, Arab and Shagya Arab, specially selected for breeding.

"This programme is continued today in modern times and a pure bred Trakehner can only come from a carefully chosen stallion and a mare.

"We call it 'graded' in modern times to enhance the bloodlines.

There are 'Gradings' held in the UK and a big one in Germany always held at the end of October."
