Blood clot risk of breast cancer drug.


THE drug tamoxifen tamoxifen (təmŏk`sĭfĕn'), synthetic hormone used in the treatment of breast cancer. Introduced in 1978, tamoxifen is used to prevent recurrences of cancer in women who have already undergone surgery to remove their tumors.  can cut the chance of breast cancer by one third in healthy women with a high risk of developing the disease.

But a new study also found the drug was linked with more than a doubling in the risk of blood-clotting complications.

This is especially so after surgery or long periods of immobility immobility

standing still and disinclined to move, as in an animal suddenly blinded; responds to other stimuli unless immobility is part of a dummy syndrome when all stimuli are ignored.

The findings of the study, published in The Lancet this week, were presented at the 3rd European Breast Cancer Conference in Barcelona in March.

Professor Jack Cuzick from Cancer Research UK said the possible side effect was explained to all women before they joined the trial and they were advised to take a break.
