Transcoder (the 6289 QQQT) for DigiCipher(R) II compatibility is an essential element of a system configuration that allows a cable TV operator to offer a state-of-the-art digital television package that is both bandwidth efficient and extremely economical, permitting even small systems to offer digital services. The QQQT transcodes an existing 30 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc. QPSK satellite transponder A receiver/transmitter on a communications satellite. DigiCipher II compatibility means support for HITS Quick Take(TM) & WSNet Quick Take Plus(TM) services, as well as Canada's Cancom Star Choice(TM) service. The QQQT enables operators to offer a digital tier of more than 200 channels when used in conjunction with Motorola's QAM DSR-470 & DSR-471 set-top boxes in the home. Dr. Keith Kelley, VP of Strategic Planning at Motorola's Broadband Communications Sector, describes Motorola's role in the launch of the new QAM system. "Blonder Tongue's QAM transcoder is a key component in this new system allowing for digital programming to reach more subscribers at a much lower cost to the system operator than ever before. Our DSR-470 receiver is built to decode those signals in the subscriber's home. In addition to providing up to 200 digital channels of digital programming, the Motorola DSR-470 offers convenient digital features for easy navigation to favorite channels or categories of programming and advanced parental controls for blocking of unwanted programs." Kelley added, "We are excited to offer the end user interface that makes this system deliver expanded programming and advanced digital features to under-served markets where more elaborate configurations were impractical. Our role with this product also includes providing the satellite authorization services and marketing support for system operators." The entire line of Triple QT products are extremely easy to set up and operate. They are fully agile, permitting the operator to select any input transponder frequency and transcode (1) To convert from one format to another. Unique to the full Blonder Tongue QQQT product line, is its Remote Monitoring and Control accessibility. This capability is built into all units. It allows an operator to manage a headend from a remote location, via the optional software package and a modem, thereby eliminating the need for a truck roll or lengthy outage. "The QQQT and the QAM program gives system operators the competitive edge they need to compete with direct-to-home satellite," commented Frank Matarazzo, President of Microwave Satellite Technologies, Inc. The market potential for this product is very significant and largely untapped. There are approximately 8,270 small systems in the United States, some of which have more than 1 headend. Based upon digital penetration rates, number of transponders and other factors, Blonder Tongue estimates the market potential for the QQQT is approximately $140 million.
