For those who live or work near Wall Street, the Stone Street Historic District has long been considered a hidden treasure. Rich in history as the first paved street in Manhattan, Stone Street now bustles with quaint cafes and fine eateries and often provides the perfect refuge from busy Wall Street life. The district is a quiet enclave of magnificent low-rise nineteenth century buildings. One such building, Block Hall, is currently undergoing a magnificent transformation. Located on the same street that houses the impressive Delmonico's and the Wall Street Inn, Block Hall was originally erected in 1927 as a private club and restaurant. Years of neglect brought the building into virtual abandonment, making it a structural sore on the historic block. Herculian efforts by New York City fire fighter turned real estate developer James Kennelly, of Kennelly Development, along with Keith and Kevin DeMatteis have succeeded in resurrecting the building. The exterior facade of Block Hall is being completely restored into the elegant Tudor-style building it once was. The architecture features projecting porches, a magnificent mansard roof mansard roof (măn`särd), type of roof, so named because it was frequently used by the French architect François Mansart. It was not devised by him but was used early in the 16th cent. and an abundance of detail, making the structure one of the most striking in the district. Residences at Block Hall will feature high ceilings, white oak floors, Tudor style windows and state-of-the-art appliances by Viking, Liebherr and Miele. |
