D'FERMLINE 1 QOS 4 FIVE goals rippled the net during an amazing 12-minute spell when you were scared to blink in case you missed anything.

Unfortunately for Dunfermline fans, four of them came from Queen of the South as they stormed to the top of the table.

It was hardly surprising Derek Holmes was a happy man as he left East End Park after hitting the fourth from the penalty spot just before half-time.

The powerful striker won the First Division with St Johnstone last season and, after moving to Queens to work under Gordon Chisholm for a second time, is eyeing a special double.

Debut boy Dennis Wyness, signed on loan from St Mirren, hit the opener in the 33rd minute before Dunfermline quickly pulled one back thanks to a superb Nicky Phinn header.

But a Paul Burns double followed by Holmes' spot-kick - after he had been fouled by Scott Muirhead - made it a memorable day for Queens.

Holmes said:"Itwasa bizarre period as we scored, they scored and then it was 10 minutes of attack after attack and we managed to get goals.

"It's fantastic to be top but it will be tough to stay there.

"Dunfermline are no mugs and to score four here is a great achievement.

"We've got the capabilities to win the First Division but just have to keep the momentum and consistency.

"Gordon was massive in my decision to come here as I've worked with him before at RossCounty.If we can emulate what Saints did last season, it will be brilliant."

Kamikaze Pars slumped to their fourth straight league defeat but winger Joe Cardle insists they should have had a spot-kick at 1-1 after he went down in the box following a Marc McAusland challenge.

He said:"It was a blatant penalty and could have changed the game. I was already on a booking so if it's a dive the ref has to give me another yellow but he didn't.

"I was one on one with the keeper and their player took me out.They then went up the pitch and scored a second."

Gutted Pars boss Jim McIntyre said:"Wehave committed cardinal sins and the lads are not learning from the mistakes. It's schoolboy defending at times."
