There really was a blind horse called Tom who worked pulling flatcars for construction crews who were building our country's first transcontinental railroad. Now that story has been historical re-told by author Shirley Raye Redmond in "Blind Tom: The Horse Who Helped Build The Great Railroad", published by the Mountain Press Publishing Company and charmingly illustrated by University of New Mexico art student Lois Bradley. This 48-page paperback picture book is enhanced for young readers ages 5 and older with a glossary of 'Things to Know' and bibliographic references so the young reader can learn more about the transcontinental railroad. As informative as it is entertaining, this true story of the handicapped horse who became famous in his own time is very highly recommended reading and certain to become a popular addition to school and community library collections.
