The term ice cave refers to any type of natural cave (most commonly lava tubes or limestone caves) that contains significant amounts of perennial (year-round)

From her first memories of hiding in an ice cave at the age of three on a family winter camping trip, Bledsoe has wanted and needed to be part of the wilderness. She uses it for relaxation, mental clarification, challenge and exhilaration.  says. The collection ends with the ultimate adventure, a trip to the Antarctic where she goes as an "Artist in Residence" as a guest of the National Science Foundation. Here she sleeps in an ice cave, just like her early memory. She is even allowed to go to the actual South Pole South Pole, southern end of the earth's axis, lat. 90° S. It is distinguished from the south magnetic pole. The South Pole was reached by Roald Amundsen, a Norwegian explorer, in 1911.
