Blaze escape.


An elderly man was thought to be in a ground floor flat when firefighters were called to put out a blaze.

The flat, in Southfield House sheltered accommodation in Heaton Road, Newcastle, was severely damaged by the fire yesterday which is believed to have started in the kitchen.

Luckily, the occupier had managed to get out but the remainder of the flat was damaged by smoke from the fire as was part of the communal corridor outside.
