POLICE sources said yesterday that the Exeter cafe bomb was a "viable" device constructed of so dium hydroxide, kerosene kerosene or kerosine, colorless, thin mineral oil whose density is between 0.75 and 0.85 grams per cubic centimeter. A mixture of hydrocarbons, it is commonly obtained in the fractional distillation of petroleum as the portion boiling off , strips of aluminium foil and a number of nails.

Sources close to the inquiry said the bomb was a fireballtype device that was extremely volatile and may have been detonated by shaking.

Detectives are investigating whether the backroom restaurant toilet was the place where the detonation was intended to take place.

Those who constructed the device, and another similar bomb found at the scene, may have believed that its force would have been powerful enough to blow out the front of the restaurant.
