SUNDAY

THERE'S no such thing as a day off in my line of work.

And no difficulty in conducting Transatlantic business from my home in Dunfermline. A desk is a desk and a phone is a phone in the modern world.

So the job of selling Ronnie Ekelund, a Dane, from a French club to San Jose Earthquakes in America's Major Soccer League is something that can be done with relative ease.

Sunday is the day when business begins for the week.

MONDAY

Everything is geared towards July 1 in the office I share with my partners, Trevor Steven, the former Rangers and England internationalist, and Bobby Brown.

That's the date players can move when they are out of contract and six of the 40 on our roster are eligible to change clubs under Bosman.

But the business doesn't revolve around transfers.

Gavin Rae is off to Poland with Scotland to make his international debut but wants me to arrange the purchase of a house for him in Dundee.

And I call another of my clients, Rangers' Neil McCann, to see how he's recovering from his double hernia operation.

Players like to know they are in your thoughts.

TUESDAY

I'm on Tom Boyd's testimonial committee.

So a visit to Celtic Park is essential on the day it is confirmed Manchester United will play in Glasgow on May 15 to honour a man I truly admire.

Paul McStay is on the committee as well and we need to organise special strips for the occasion, a souvenir programme and check on catering facilities with Jim Hone, Celtic's operations director.

We're hoping for a 60,000 capacity crowd to watch the clash of the league champions from Scotland and England.

But these events don't just happen. The preparation is so intense that I get back home to Fife at 11.15pm.

WEDNESDAY

I'm back behind my desk in the office at nine o'clock in the morning.

I have 31 years practice as a lawyer, coming to the fore where punctuality is concerned. The president of Turkish Besiktas calls to ask if I can help place two players, one a Frenchman.

My knowledge of the language is limited but Trevor is fluent from his time with Marseille so that's a big help.

Sir Alex Ferguson's son Jason is in charge of Ryan Giggs' testimonial match at Old Trafford on August 1.

He's on the phone to see if there are any ideas we can trade over Celtic's visit to Manchester.

THURSDAY

The after-effects of a good night out at Dollar Accies Rugby Club's dinner kick in but there is still plenty of business to be done.

Stewart Kerr is wanted by Millwall's manager Mark McGhee.

They are newly promoted to Division One in England and Stewart needs a new direction after losing his way at Celtic Park.

I thought he was a Scotland goalkeeper in the making so I would like to see his career galvanised.

Then it's time to speak to Rangers owner David Murray about matters of mutual interest.

He is chairman of a major club and in charge of many and varied companies throughout the world. Yet he's always accessible if business is to be done.

FRIDAY

The game can protect a player for life and part of my remit is to look after my clients' welfare. Today is the time for attending to their sickness and disability insurance cover as well as inspecting their pension and investment schemes.

The high earners in the game can look forward to retirement at the age of 35 if they want.

And the better the player, the easier my job becomes.

If a top performer is available I simply need to inform the leading six clubs in England and test the Old Firm to assess their level of interest.

And the continentals don't mind Glasgow because the rate of pay is favourable to say the least.

SATURDAY

Going to watch Dunfermline play St Mirren could be called a form of recreation if it wasn't for the fact that the Pars get me more excited than watching AC Milan or Barcelona.

I was a director of Dunfermline for 10 years.

And my emotional attachment to the team goes back to the time when I watched them beat Celtic in the legendary Scottish Cup Final at Hampden 40 years ago.

But even if Pars had the new Michael Owen on their books and he was my client, I'd move him out of the club if that was best for his career.

If I represent a player, his best interest comes before anything or anyone, including Dunfermline.

That's always my business philosophy.

And I'll always stick to it.
