DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 7, 2000

Blackstone Technology Group, the leading compute To perform mathematical operations or general computer processing. For an explanation of "The 3 C's," or how the computer processes data, see computer.  farm software and service provider, today announced a single-step solution for transforming Sun Ultra(TM) 80s into a compute farm. Currently referred to as "UltraGrid Project", the solution, which targets European customers, includes an integration kit and Blackstone's ComputeFarm Advantage(TM) services. The integration kit racks four, 4-processor, shared-memory Ultra 80 compute nodes with a Myrinet(TM) high-end interconnect (1) To attach one device to another.

switch. Blackstone's ComputeFarm Advantage, the world's first comprehensive compute farm service offering, is then applied to turn this hardware configuration into an application-specific compute farm.

Kanti Purohit, chief operating officer Chief Operating Officer (COO)

The officer of a firm responsible for day-to-day management, usually the president or an executive vice-president.
of Blackstone, said, "More and more companies in industries that rely on compute-intensive applications are seeking compute farm solutions. UltraGrid Project offers Sun customers unprecedented convenience and speed in transforming their Ultra 80 networked servers into compute farms." Purohit added, "Sun's industrial-strength Solaris(TM) environment makes the UltraGrid Project-based compute farm a highly attractive offering in terms of reliability, manageability, performance, and total cost of ownership."

Target markets for UltraGrid Project include chip design, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, education and research, oil & gas, financial risk modeling, and digital content creation The development of newsworthy, educational and entertainment material for distribution over the Internet or other electronic media. See DAMS. .

Blackstone's ComputeFarm Advantage is comprised of three elements: strategy audit, methodology audit, and technology delivery. It also includes use of Blackstone's SmartWatch(TM) monitoring software for 90 days. During the methodology audit, Blackstone analyzes network bottlenecks, and where applicable, recommends use of its SmartCache(TM) network performance software.

Available today, the UltraGrid Project "Base Rack" kit lists at US$20,400 for Sun Ultra 80 customers. For prospective Ultra 80 customers, all of the hardware including the integration kit as well as the four, 4-processor (450 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  each) Ultra 80s The Ultra 80 is a fairly large (445 mm high, 255 mm wide and 602 mm deep) and heavy (29.5 kg) computer workstation in a tower enclosure from Sun Microsystems. The Ultra 80 was launched in November 1999 and shipped with Solaris 2.5.1.  - available through Sun distributors worldwide - costs approximately US$129,000, based on Sun's published prices. Currently, ComputeFarm Advantage is priced separately and starts at US$15,000. The LSF option for load management is also priced separately. UltraGrid Project "Expansion Rack" kit, which allows for expansion in increments of 32 processors, is also immediately available from Blackstone.

Blackstone is featuring "UltraGrid Project" demonstrations at booth #220 at the SC2000 Conference, November 6-10, 2000.

More on Compute Farms

A compute farm is a pool of networked computers that are fused fuse 1 also fuze

into a single source of massive compute power. Compute farms are created by applying enabling technology and application- and industry-specific knowledge to achieve Big Iron benefits at a fraction of the cost. They provide scalable and uninterrupted compute power for executing jobs that are long-running as well as CPU- and memory-intensive. Unlike server farms used in e-commerce and web-hosting applications, which process a huge number of relatively short transactions, compute farms efficiently execute a smaller number of large jobs that run for extended time periods.
