Blackouts at Delhi airport could be history.Byline: Ajay Jha Chief, Correspondent New Delhi: Come next year and the irritating power blackouts will become a thing of the past at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI IGI International Genealogical Index IGI International Gemological Institute IGI I'm Going In IGI I Get It IGI Institute of Geologists of Ireland IGI Inspector General for Investigations IGI Institution Gang Investigator (prisons) ) Airport. The private-sector Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), which is in the process of renovating IGI Airport to bring it on par with world-class standards, has come up with an ambitious plan to generate its own electricity to meet all its requirements and sell the surplus to a metropolis reeling under perpetual power shortages. Interestingly, DIAL will generate electricity by using garbage. According to Arun Arora, DIAL vice president, a Rs1,400 million (Dh105m) plant has been planned for this purpose in partnership with GMR (Giant Magnetoresistance) See magnetoresistance. Energy and Selco International. The plant to convert garbage into electricity is to be installed on a 5.7-acre plot identified for the purpose. The plant is planned to be commissioned late next year to coincide with Delhi hosting the Commonwealth Games. It will have capacity to generate 10MW of electricity per day, of which DIAL would use only about half, while the surplus would be sold to private-sector distribution company BSES BSES British Schools' Exploring Society BSES Bombay Suburban Electric Supply BSES Bureau of Street and Environmental Services (San Francisco, CA) BSES Biology Self-Efficacy Scale , owned by the Tata group, to bridge the gap between the ever growing demand and dwindling supply situation in the city. Delhi is presently facing a shortage of about 400MW. BSES and two other private electricity distribution companies, namely NDPL NDPL National Drug Prevention League Yamuna and NDPL Rajdhani, supply about 4,000MW. What is bound to please the environmentalists is that the plant would solve the perennial problem that Delhi faces in disposing of its garbage. All identified landfill sites are running out of capacity. The proposed powerplant would require about 1,300 tonnes of garbage to produce the optimum 10MW electricity per day, which is 100 tonnes less than the total amount of garbage produced in the city right now. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is a municipal corporation that governs most of the metropolis of Delhi in India. It is one of three municipal corporations in the National Capital Territory of Delhi, the others being New Delhi Municipal Corporation, and Delhi Cantonment (MCD MCD Minor Civil Division MCD McDonalds (restaurant) Mcd Macedonian (linguistics) MCD Municipal Corporation of Delhi MCD Magnetic Circular Dichroism MCD Mad Cow Disease ) will take responsibility for delivering garbage from across the city to the plant. DIAL is of the opinion that it is going to be a win-win situation for all concerned. IGI Airport would not face power cuts, BSES will have additional electricity to light more homes, MCD would not have to bother about where to dump its garbage and Delhi may become a garbage-free city.
