Blackhawks beat Stars 2-1 in overtime

Jason Williams scored a power-play goal 43 seconds into overtime to give the Chicago Blackhawks a 2-1 win over the Dallas Stars on Saturday night.

Williams beat Tobias Stephan on a high shot from 40 feet out, with Chicago rookie Jonathan Toews cutting across the crease. Stephan was screened on the shot.

Chicago's Robert Lang deflected in Toews' shot with 1.5 seconds left in the third period to tie it 1, ruining Stephan's shutout bid in his first NHL game. Lang connected on a 5-on-3 power play, with Chicago goalie Patrick Lalime pulled for an extra attacker.

Stephan, a 23-year-old Swiss native, is backing up Marty Turco while Mike Smith is out with an arm injury. Stephan stopped 38 shots.

Brenden Morrow's power-play goal opened the scoring for Dallas with 6:12 left in the first period. He knocked in a loose rebound from the crease after Lalime had blocked Niklas Hagman's attempt from the left side of the net.

Lalime made 17 saves in his first start this season.

Chicago held a 19-14 advantage in shots through two periods.

Stephan blocked several screened attempts through opening 40 minutes, but didn't face many rebounds or sustained pressure until the third period, when the Blackhawks outshot the Stars 20-4.

Just over six minutes into the third, Stephan made a glove save on Lang's quick shot from the slot. He was sharp during several flurries later in the period, until Lang finally managed to tie it.

Notes:@ Dallas backup goalie Smith sat out for a third straight game on Saturday. Turco had played in the Stars' 3-2 overtime loss to Calgary in Dallas on Friday. ... Chicago's top goalie, Nikolai Khabibulin, got a rest on Saturday after starting Chicago's first four games and stopping 34 shots in a 3-2 win at Detroit on Friday. ... Chicago RW Martin Havlat missed his fourth game with a right shoulder injury and remains out indefinitely.
