This is the first study to show that drinking the black brew, depending on the dose, reduces both blood pressure and arterial stiffness Arteries stiffen as a consequence of age and atherosclerosis. The two leading causes of death in the developed world, myocardial infarction and stroke, are both a direct consequence of atherosclerosis. , helping to maintain a person's cardiovascular health.

The research was carried out the University of L'Aquila in Italy and supported by Lipton Institute of Tea.

Liz Finlay, of Lyons Tea, said that as the biggest tea drinkers in the world, the results are good news.

She added: "Almost 90 per cent of Irish people drink tea with the average person drinking around four cups a day.

"So now we have even more reason to enjoy our favourite cuppa, as each cup of tea could benefit our heart health."
