 State Police said severe black ice was present in the area when the accident occurred. The southbound lanes of the freeway were closed for five hours.

Blood donation is a process by which a blood donor voluntarily has blood drawn for storage in a blood bank, generally for subsequent use in a blood transfusion.
 40 percent as blood drives were canceled because of school closures and road conditions. The Lane Memorial Blood Bank will be open extended hours on Monday, the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, to take donations.

The blood bank is in need of all blood types but especially A and O, both positive and negative, Communications Director Christine Stockdale said. She said donors should call to make an appointment; if the office is closed, they should leave a message including a time when it's most convenient to visit. The phone number is 484-9111.

Several area school districts stayed closed a second day Friday because of black ice in many areas. Springfield, Crow-Applegate-Lorane, McKenzie, Triangle Lake, Fern Ridge, Pleasant Hill and South Lane all were closed, and most other districts opened two hours late.

Forecasts call for continued dry weather for the next several days with slowly moderating temperatures. Highs should reach the mid-40s by Tuesday, with lows near freezing.
