Black hole in figures.A black hole in the Government's homeless statistics reveals the number of people slipping through the net of local authority help. Many miss out on support because they are not classed as priority cases. It is those non-priority cases that Teesside Homeless Action Group is hoping to find. In 2003-2004: * Redcar and Cleveland The borough of Redcar & Cleveland is a unitary authority in the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, England consisting of Redcar, Saltburn-by-the-Sea, Guisborough, and small towns such as Brotton, Skelton and Loftus. Council classed 574 as priority cases, but 549 fell through the net. * Middlesbrough Middlesbrough Town and unitary authority (pop., 2001: 134,487), geographic county of North Yorkshire, historic county of Yorkshire, England. Situated on the southern bank of the River Tees, it was formed in 1830 with the arrival of the railway to the site of a new Council classed 462 as priority cases with 113 people missing out. * Stockton Council counted 675 priority cases - with 809 falling through the net. North East Housing Aid Centre manager Bob Finch finch, common name for members of the Fringillidae, the largest family of birds (including over half the known species), found in most parts of the world except Australia. said: "What worries me is the number of non-priority cases. Where do they go?" |
