Black and white storks in Jenin draw attention for large numbers and lengthy stay.

Jenin / PNN - In a follow-up to the scientific activities of the Assembly of Wildlife at the national level, the crew to monitor research in the field has watched several thousand birds over the past two days. Storks migrated to Arraba in the northern West Bank's Jenin Governorate. Thousands of them are flying over the garbage dump there. Originally European, the official migration season of these birds ended last month. Analysis and attention is focusing on their continued presence.Imad Al Atrash, researcher in ornithology and wildlife and the Executive Director of the Wildlife Assembly said today that his crew is following this phenomenon. Although it is summer these spring birds are still in Palestine. "The date is far more unique than the volume," said Al Atrash. "Some of the birds may be ill or small and need to reside in this region, but not in such large numbers." The Assembly has been monitoring some 4,000 birds and is looking to see if they remain through the autumn migration season back to Palestine.Atrash said that because of these numbers "we may need to establish basic rules for building nests in the next year because they need to build nests for a fairly large proportion to the size and so we could see a new phenomenon that has never been recorded before in Palestine."Millions of these black and white storks pass through Palestine from Europe to Africa each year and some stay for spring, but there is no record of local nest building.
