This book on the miseducation of black youth by middle class teachers is primarily written for professional educators, although a small section of the book is written for parents. While the cover, which pictures a hip black youth next to a white bespectacled teacher, gives the impression that the book is written for white middle class teachers, Kunjufu makes it clear that black middle class teachers also contribute to the underachievement of black children.

Kunjufu, an educational consultant and former teacher, has written numerous other books on African American issues and has developed Afrocentric/multicultural curriculum for use in schools. He has a very clear agenda--to improve academic achievement among African American students. In this book, he calls for critical changes in education to ensure that black children make the same academic gains as white children. The book is written in a simple, informal style. Kunjufu's passion for changing schools is evident, and he shares important ideas for better serving low-income black youth. While the message is important, the book does include over-generalizations, leaps in logic, and the overuse overuse Health care The common use of a particular intervention even when the benefits of the intervention don't justify the potential harm or cost–eg, prescribing antibiotics for a probable viral URI.
